As I have said many times, I live on the very edge of the Cotswold Hills, and this picture shows this very well. If you look closely at the hill and trees in the very centre, below those trees is my village home.
The two hills right and left have some interesting history. On the left is Uley Bury, an impressive multi-vallated Iron Age hill fort, and dates from 300 BC to 100 AC. Vallated means there were many ramparts coming up the hillside.
On the right is Downham Hill with the group of trees on top, more commonly known as Hospital Hill due to there once being an isolated hospital on it for small-pox in the 18th and 19th century. It was also used by Edward Jenner who lived in nearby Berkeley and discovered vaccination for the small-pox diseases, he finally successfully injecting a small 8 year old boy in 1757 and inoculation was invented.
Wherever you adventure you will find important history on your way, along with some wonderful views. I did climb Hospital Hill some years ago and almost needed a hospital myself.
