First of all, I need to say that i do not like driving. Not at all.
Last fall I finally found the courage to get my driver's license (yes, a little late!) and just when I was starting to feel comfortable driving on my own, the first major snowfall occurred. It was a major storm and for several reasons I needed to take the car out that day while my husband was at work. It was so scary for me because since it was my first time driving in snow, i wasn't use to the "feel" of it, and It seemed like i could hardly see out the windows.
But the worst part for me was that I got stuck three times that day! Lucky for me there were people around to help me! But after that I vowed I was not driving again until every bit of snow was gone.
So now it's gone, and here i am driving again. I picked the car up from my husbands work and took it to run some errands. It was okay other than it taking me what felt like half an hour to back out of a parking stall (I really need to work on that!)
I've not been behind the wheel for 18 years now. Can't help but think I'm going to have to start from scratch when I move to the US. I don't see how I'll manage there without a car :(
You're very brave to have taken the plunge and I'm sure you'll get better at the reversing bit :) Good on ya!
@anron thanks Anita :) I'm going to get my husband to take me to practice reversing, lol. Had you driven very often, prior to the last 18 years? maybe it's one of those things that will be easy to pick up again! or maybe the place you are moving to has excellent public transportation??? :)
oh my gawsh lauren. the more i read about who you are as a person, i cant help but giggle at how much we are alike!! I HAAAATE driving as well!! Well...when i am alone mostly. If i am with my husband i am ALOT more calm and relaxed. When we go somewhere, he is always the one who drives...and i am FINE with that!! haha. I HATE winter driving ESPECIALLY!!! i seriously do not even go anywhere on my own, haha.
Lauren, right now you are pushing outside your comfort zone, a person can only learn and grow when we try to do the things we thought we could not do. Think of how your photography is improving the more you practice and challenge yourself. As with driving, most of us were worried at one stage, but we improved the more we practiced. Confidence will come in it's own time, and I don't think anyone actually enjoys driving on snow or ice. And most of us get stuck :-) good on you, onwards and upwards :-)
Lauren nice shot keep at it you'll be fine, I'm going through the same presently re-learning to drive bif trucks but not as big as you have over there only 44 t GVW....................
Well nothing improves one's driving like shooting self portraits while doing so, lol. Just kidding:) Good for you for getting up the courage to get out there and try, try again. My Mom took me out in a snowstorm and let me do donuts in an empty parking lot to learn to drive in the snow - you should try it - it's fun!
Not a huge driving fan either, though it is one of those things that gets better with practice. Cool idea for a selfie too (even if it is a hand selfie!) :)
No, I never did drive much so I think I'll be starting over. Minneapolis does have very good transportation and is big on green transport but I don't fancy cycling or waiting for buses in the depths of winter. I'll have to see how it goes.
@michelleyoung thank you Michelle :) it certainly is outside of my comfort zone but I am proud of myself for finally doing it. Thanks for the kind encouragement. who knows, maybe one day i will even like it!
@pwallis I sufferred great embarrassment for this selfie! had my tripod set up inside the car with me and sat there snapping away. My neighbours walked beside me and saw...
@anron but the good thing about the bus is that you can sit and read or close your eyes and let someone else deal with traffic, and not worry about parking!
@bobg did retinal surgery make sure vision worse?? too bad but hopefully you are able to easily get around without
@laurentye is was actually cateract surgery gone wrong. The vision is actually better now, but limited peripheral vision in one eye. I'm withing walking distance from train and stores, so am ok. Plus my wife has a car.
@bobg oh no! sorry to hear that your peripheral vision is diminished, but it's fortunate that your vision is better (very fortunate for your photography!)
