Uncle Tim's Bridge by lauriehiggins

Uncle Tim's Bridge

Today was a learning day photo-wise. The biggest thing I learned is that I really do not like taking mid-day photos in bright sunshine. I will test this in other seasons, but this time of year I think it just shows the bleakness of the Cape. On the other hand, early evening light here is just plain magical...

This Wellfleet bridge was originally built in 1844 and repaired many times over the years until it was rebuilt in 2008. I caught it at a particularly high tide, but the bridge spans the Duck Creek tidal marsh and leads to a small island with walking trails. Since this photo does not do it justice, I will go back in a different season and try to capture it better.
Such a pretty spot! I've learned that between about 11-1, the light is at its absolute worst - everything is washed out and you get no shadows. Definitely difficult conditions for photography! I think you did a great job of making the most of it though.

Hi there! This looks just like Swan Bay where I spend way too much time! Love the sound of Duck Creek Tidal Marsh!

@melissapike Oh, Melissa, today completely taught me that lesson! I took 60 washed out, bad photos. It's so funny you are my first commenter, because this photo made me think of your advice to take alot of photos out of my comfort zone, even if only to learn what I don't like.

Afternoon shots are so tough. Light is just harsh. You've done a nice job with this.

Great perspective! Sounds so fun to cross that and take on some trails! Great capture, Laurie!

Still sounds intriguing! The history of the bridge stands testament to any floods? High tides?

Love the patterns, and looks like an interesting place to explore

It still look sgreat, but I agree. I much prefer going out very early or later in the afternoon.

Nice POV.

Do not criticize your photo! I love it! I've not been to this area. Next time I'm down, can we go there? You know how I love to walk on trails. The light grasses in the foreground are interesting.

I'm with Beverly! I think photo still great! Could be I am used to what the cape and NE in general has to offer through the seasons....

It is a beautiful scene - but yes, I'd love to see this bathed in that magical Cape light!

It is a beautiful scene. I am learning that myself.

looks like it is a mile long

I'll have to go with Paula because I believe everything she says. Just kidding. You may be disappointed but this is a wonderful photo. Uncle Tim's Bridge is looking mighty long. You should take one in the morning and one in the early evening and then you can have a series!

I really like the perspective on this. I take way too many shots mid-day and don't get enough golden hour shots.

Laurie, I have never been to Wellfleet other than to drive by on my way to Provincetown. This definitely makes me want to go check it out. Maybe this would be a good weekend. Thanks!

Laurie I totally agree. I hate shooting midday with all that bland colorless glare. Early morning or late afternoon into my Fav blue hour and night for me. This is wonderful though how the bridge creates a strong leading line.

i always shoot in the middle of the day and you are right....not the best time..but it is the only time i shoot. i need to try different times to get better results....great shot..i still love it

I agree, Laurie - I'm never really happy with my mid-day shots, but I love this one. I don't think it makes the Cape look bleak at all! The tides have been incredibly high lately with the full moon - I actually like low-tide shot - you can really see what's under all that water. That island looks like it would be a great place to visit.

I really like the POV in this shot. The lighting just changes the shot so radically, doesn't it? I'm learning that as I go along :)

How did I miss this. great light for the kind of picture you wanted.
I've never heard about this place in the 39 years I've lived on the Cape. Thanks for sharing it.

If you do not have bridges, photo's of them are nice, no matter what time of the day they are taken.
