I'm not sure exactly how it worked, because I didn't think to look behind the door once it was opened....but by pulling on the rope/piece of timber, the door to this hut swung open. I guess it must be weighted in some way, or perhaps have a spring, so as to stop the door swinging open in the blustering winds. This was from the Four Mile Hut that I shared a photo of earlier ( http://365project.org/leggzy/365/2016-12-28 )....it is a hut that is now there for stranded skiers/walkers in bad weather conditions, so it needs to be freely accessible with no locks....so I guess this is the answer, and it also serves the purpose of the door not banging open & closed in bad winds. I liked the lines, patterns & textures :)
