I live on an island-the fact that it is man made is irrelevant. I've spent a great deal of time throughout my life at the canal that created the island. I would sit there in my car all day if I could. So many marvelous things pass through. This guy just finished ushering a much larger ship safely to the open waters, turned around and is heading back to from whence it came. Look closely. There's a man sitting up top making sure all is well.
@fishers Hi Ian! I live on the Cape (Cape Cod) in MA. I could go on forever about how beautiful it is here and about the Canal, but I'll spare you,and post a link if you are interested. Tall Ships, Mayflower replica(docked inPlymouth MA), pleasure boats, sail boats, (even an occasional whale and some dolphins) make their way through here. It's a busy place-a wonderful place to park for lunch and enjoy the views. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_Cod_Canal
Thank you Lizzy - your canal is on a much grander scale than the canals here in the UK. You can see from some of my recent 365 posts the much smaller scale of our canals (eg http://365project.org/fishers/365/2016-08-17 , http://365project.org/fishers/365/2016-08-18 ), although despite their limited size they did play a key role in the industrial revolution. I'm looking forward to reading the link that you sent in more detail when I get chance - I always enjoy learning more about places that are new to me!
@fishers yes they are very different! This Canal doesn't have locks. They have built a few restaurants, and there is a recreation area and a visitor's center with the Canal's complete history. We are a major tourist area in the summer, so it gets crowded there.
