Adding a new dimension to the ancient art of portraiture.
Seattle artist Susie J. Lee asks workers in the oil and gas industry in North Dakota to sit silently for her video camera for up to 30 minutes at a time. “The images she captures represent neither the fleeting, frozen moment of still photography, nor a painting’s static image created by long observation. Rather, each image becomes an act of observation.”
These video portraits were spell binding, as you saw the subject “in all his human physicality”. In my photo, this man barely moved his arms as I was taking the photo.
Interesting concept- sitting for a 30 minute video reminds me of how long the people had to sit for a portrait when photography was in its infancy. It must feel like an eternity for these men and women who have very active jobs!
