Memorial Oaks by maggiemae

Memorial Oaks

photo 313
These huge and lovely oaks lead the way into Oamaru and with their spring finery on, enchant the visitor into town. Each one of these oaks has a cross at the base commemorating a fallen soldier in the First World War. Familiar names like Passchendaele, Gallipoli, Sandfontain in 1915 to 1918 place these young soldiers of North Otago in the horrifc battles.

Spring has sprung by the looks of these lovely trees! How fresh they look & ours are all dying off now. A very fitting memorial to all your brave soldiers.....a living memorial!

Nice to hear of the memorial - in a living manner! Far more poignant than a statue in my humble opinion. :-)
