Town on show by maggiemae

Town on show

NZ Television came to Oamaru to film what was so special about this small town. It might have been after I had replied at great length to a question from them - "Tell us what is why your small town is so special" The locals came into the historic part of the town all dressed in either Victorian wear or Steam Punk costumes. Lots of fun and very impressive! The mayor is seen here talking to a swaggie and the mayor's wife is in the blue costume. Background shows the usual tourist.

Three Good Things:
1. I bought some huge yams and a juicy cabbage at the Farmer's Market there.
2. Talked to son John in Japan on Facetime and watched his cat stalking their two rabbits around the small deck. The rabbits won!
3. Watched the making of Dr Zivago. It is a fabulous film!
You are a great town for reliving your history so very special indeed...you must all have great big dressing up boxes!!

I thinks 365 is a great way of showing what is special about all our local areas and for me,this is what makes following others so fascinating

7 Sharp is really getting around .. our small town featured on Friday with the White Horse story.. and even one of my photo's featured, ( the horse mowing the lawn) so feel pretty chuffed about that, look forward to seeing Oamaru's Story, a lovely place..
June 30th, 2013
@julzmaioro I missed that! What town is it? There is a white horse in Waimate.
June 30th, 2013
BTW maggiemae I would feel rather chuffed if I were you...sounds as if it was all down to your question that they came!!
June 30th, 2013
@maggiemae This is so cute. I love the way Oamaru has emraced the Victoriana/ Steampunk things. Cannot stand Seven Sharp but will watch to see this. When was it aired?
June 30th, 2013
@julzmaioro Curious also as to your town. Would love to view.
June 30th, 2013
Nice presentation of Oamaru celebrating its fine heritage

@maggiemae Waiuku, We have a young guy that has a Horse (fibreglass) and he has it doing different things every day, great entertainment for the locals ( worth a watch on On Demand)

Very cool...

What a great shot, Maggiemae. It is so fun to see people dressing up. So wonderful that modern technology allows us to talk with those far away. (And I love Dr. Zhivago--a favorite for sure!!!)
June 30th, 2013
@yonnie thanks Yvonne! One child in Japan is not very happy about it! He is a difficult child and won't talk on FaceTime. Prefers to read his comic book.

June 30th, 2013
People in your town have so much fun!
June 30th, 2013
love the juxtaposition of modern and retro... and your decision to go super high key with this.. very nice!
July 1st, 2013
Love all the old costumes, the ladies look most elegant. Whatever you did the processing has added an aged look.
July 1st, 2013
I love the high key in this! Makes it feel like an overexposed shot from a vintage camera or something. Sounds like a fun day!
July 1st, 2013
Looks like a fun day....had a laugh about the cat and the rabbit....Dr Zivago is one of my husband's most favourite film.
July 1st, 2013

Really cool shot. So you got them to come to town? Nice. Love the costumes!

Sounds like a fantastic place to live, people having such fun dressing up in costume. They have Scarborough Fair Renaissance Festival near here, where everyone dresses up and they have games and things from olden times. We have not attended it yet. It will be next April through May.

Very interesting catch and I like how you processed it. Japan! Wow!!! Have you ever been there to see him? Go for me during cherry blossom season next year and take a picture!
July 1st, 2013
@nana2r Yes we have been there twice! There are an awful lot of people in Japan - hardly any countryside! The blossom is just as good in Alexandra in Central Otago, NZ!

Awesome shot

How fun! Great capture.

I like that you always write about three good things. Lovely idea.
July 1st, 2013
What cool scene! Neat idea in overexposing the shot!!
July 1st, 2013
I find that if it too dark with whatever, it is better to up the exposure and the EV! @cisco

So chuffed is happy? Proud? I always thought it was tired. Every now and then I read, "I'm dead chuffed" and we say "dead tired"

I love the steampunk novels and this looks like such a great time!
July 1st, 2013
@pandorasecho you don't mean "stuffed" do you Dixie? I'm totally stuffed means out of energy in one meaning!
July 1st, 2013
the softness and the high key make this shot look vintage. i like it!
July 1st, 2013
So what the tourist come to your town for, Maggie ? Mayor and his wife are really into their characters. Lovely shot.
July 1st, 2013
Look like a lot of fun! Love getting dressed up myself!
July 1st, 2013

@julzmaioro @carolinedreams @witchyjacq. Oamaru is going to be on 7sharp on Friday 5th July. I was right behind the camera when they were interviewing Donna Demente.

@bardejov tons of things! We have a blue penguin colony right in our harbour, Victorian festivals, stem punk festivals and displays, a famous restaurant nearby where the fish come right out of the sea into Fleur's kitchen, music festivals, fishing for salmon in a nearby river, climbing huge rocks in a country field called Elephant Rocks, a Heritage Trail, fossils, ....including me!
July 1st, 2013

July 1st, 2013

July 1st, 2013
@maggiemae Thanks for the info. From your pictures I got the idea that it's a unique place with beautiful landscape and vistas. I didn't know about the fossils. I love fossils. :-)
July 2nd, 2013
How fun! I love the contrast of the old and new outerwear in this shot! I had a professor in seminary from NZ but I don't remember what part. He always made it sound like a lovely place to live. So now I know he was telling the truth thanks to all your great photos!
July 2nd, 2013
It is a good thing to preserve traditions and culture of a small town. I think it is a historical place on the map of NZ.
