NZ Television came to Oamaru to film what was so special about this small town. It might have been after I had replied at great length to a question from them - "Tell us what is why your small town is so special" The locals came into the historic part of the town all dressed in either Victorian wear or Steam Punk costumes. Lots of fun and very impressive! The mayor is seen here talking to a swaggie and the mayor's wife is in the blue costume. Background shows the usual tourist.
Three Good Things:
1. I bought some huge yams and a juicy cabbage at the Farmer's Market there.
2. Talked to son John in Japan on Facetime and watched his cat stalking their two rabbits around the small deck. The rabbits won!
3. Watched the making of Dr Zivago. It is a fabulous film!
7 Sharp is really getting around .. our small town featured on Friday with the White Horse story.. and even one of my photo's featured, ( the horse mowing the lawn) so feel pretty chuffed about that, look forward to seeing Oamaru's Story, a lovely place..
@maggiemae This is so cute. I love the way Oamaru has emraced the Victoriana/ Steampunk things. Cannot stand Seven Sharp but will watch to see this. When was it aired?
@maggiemae Waiuku, We have a young guy that has a Horse (fibreglass) and he has it doing different things every day, great entertainment for the locals ( worth a watch on On Demand)
What a great shot, Maggiemae. It is so fun to see people dressing up. So wonderful that modern technology allows us to talk with those far away. (And I love Dr. Zhivago--a favorite for sure!!!)
@yonnie thanks Yvonne! One child in Japan is not very happy about it! He is a difficult child and won't talk on FaceTime. Prefers to read his comic book.
Sounds like a fantastic place to live, people having such fun dressing up in costume. They have Scarborough Fair Renaissance Festival near here, where everyone dresses up and they have games and things from olden times. We have not attended it yet. It will be next April through May.
Very interesting catch and I like how you processed it. Japan! Wow!!! Have you ever been there to see him? Go for me during cherry blossom season next year and take a picture!
@nana2r Yes we have been there twice! There are an awful lot of people in Japan - hardly any countryside! The blossom is just as good in Alexandra in Central Otago, NZ!
@julzmaioro@carolinedreams@witchyjacq. Oamaru is going to be on 7sharp on Friday 5th July. I was right behind the camera when they were interviewing Donna Demente.
@bardejov tons of things! We have a blue penguin colony right in our harbour, Victorian festivals, stem punk festivals and displays, a famous restaurant nearby where the fish come right out of the sea into Fleur's kitchen, music festivals, fishing for salmon in a nearby river, climbing huge rocks in a country field called Elephant Rocks, a Heritage Trail, fossils, ....including me!
@maggiemae Thanks for the info. From your pictures I got the idea that it's a unique place with beautiful landscape and vistas. I didn't know about the fossils. I love fossils. :-)
How fun! I love the contrast of the old and new outerwear in this shot! I had a professor in seminary from NZ but I don't remember what part. He always made it sound like a lovely place to live. So now I know he was telling the truth thanks to all your great photos!
I like that you always write about three good things. Lovely idea.
I love the steampunk novels and this looks like such a great time!
