NZ Cob Cottage by maggiemae

NZ Cob Cottage

This is a sweet and well maintained cob cottage on the main road through Otago. On our way back from Invercargill, not planned but a funeral made this decision. My brother-in-law passed peacefully - so they say.

Three good things;
1. Visiting two people with cancer and learning about a friend who has it too, makes us amazed we are both still healthy!
2. A huge sausage roll each kept us going till evening.
3. Decided to get my hair cut - again.
What a lovely Cob Cottage.. and nice to see in good repair.. Sorry to hear of you BIL..

A lovely little cottage --why the "cob" -- it must have some significant meaning ?

@beryl Cob building uses hands and feet to form lumps of earth mixed with sand and straw and is fashioned to make walls - an ancient technique which is making a come back

The sign on the door leads one to believe it is a type of museum or preserved building! Fantastic image!

I am sorry for your loss. Lovely photo and processing of a lovely cottage. I love your three blessings each day. They were inspiration for my month of blessings.

Great shot.
December 2nd, 2014
@lesip Thanks for your words, Leslie. The pits is right but you can be carrying on as usual then are struck down at this time by something that was never known! Thats why we have to be happy about what we are doing.
December 2nd, 2014
@grammyn I think you are right, Katy! I didn't go right up to the door but I have heard it has been put into a Trust

What a sweet cottage. I am suprised more people don't still build with cob - it has such great insulation properties.
December 2nd, 2014
@snaphappi They are now, Maggie - its now called Mud bricks! Might be a different recipe but totally natural and as you say, its own great insulation qualities!

So sorry to read of your losses -- it certainly helps keep things in perspective about what matters. But your image is certainly lovely -- and the vignetting makes me feel like I'm peeking in.

@taffy Thank you Taffy - I chose this vignette and it seemed like it was history on a old camera images on an old film!

Great processing. Sorry to hear about your brother-in-law.

Great lighting, funerals always make me ponder my mortality
December 2nd, 2014
@wearing0 especially when you get to the age which is common in death notices! Cheers, Debi!

thanks for your explanation on cob-building. That technique must have been dormant for many years. You captured it very beautifully and the vignette gives it a great old feeling. Sorry about your loss.

What a cute place.

What a fabulous shot and love your processing, Maggiemae. So sorry about your brother in law. Cancer sucks. I have lost too many to it and have an uncle who is 90 battling it now. It is really nice to visit with people who have cancer if you can or have any illness as it is always appreciated. You are a caring, wonderful person and friend. FAV

I like the texture of both the walls and the roof. Thanks for sharing the way this is built. I'm sorry about your brother-in-law.
December 3rd, 2014
Oh dear! You really have had a year of it! My thoughts are with you.
A lovely capture of the cob house. I'm interested in your processing. Any particular reason for your choice?
December 3rd, 2014
@kwiksilver Not really Gillian - it was the first one I came across and it suited the scene. An uneven vignette!
December 3rd, 2014
@maggiemae Good enough reason, Maggie! ;)
