In the Big City one didn’t expect to see many birds but here at the Resthome where we visited SIL who had a stroke 5 years ago, we counted 10 tuis in this one tree which was full of a deep pink blossom! I changed my settings to a higher speed and cricked my neck to get what I could!
These birds have a white bobble at their throats and these lovely markings of white feathers round their necks. They are native to NZ and I never thought I could get a good photo!
Three good things:
1. A great breakfast at a restaurant that didn’t cost a lot of money.
2. A lot of people in Auckland like to keep fit - running along pavements at lunch time, jogging in the Park, walking along trails.
3. Personal Hot Spot - not me but my phone!
@grammyn Thanks Katy - our birds are not as exotic as Australia and other tropical birds but this one has great colour as well as a beautiful deep song!
Great capture! You got so much detail there and I love the colours! I remember those birds well, even though it's 25 years ago when I travelled in NZ!!
The best Tui photo I have seen! Our late dog was called Tui because she was black with a white spot on her neck. How lovely for the residents to watch these birds sitting in this colourful tree. They have a nice song too..I didn't know that!
@happypat They all saw me taking photos of them but I don't think they had known of it, Pat One old guy with a walking stick came out and took some photos too. Another little lady came up to me with a smile and said hello and exclaimed over my camera - she couldn't remember the word. Sounds like me!
@maggiemae It is the Taiwan/Taiwanese Cherry .. It is regarded as a bit of a pest as it can pop up in the Native bush where it is not wanted.. But the tui's love it and it looks so pretty, and so much earlier than the other cherry tree's
It seems that it is more of a problem in the warmer parts of NZ and Northland has banned the selling of this tree, it grows well in the Taranaki .. so it you can get hold of it should be ok..
Cool bird! The plumage around his neck reminds me of Jeff's hair when he needs a haircut! Great colors in this shot- the cricked neck was well worth it!
Fantastic bird and love the feathers that sort of give it a beautiful fur collar!! We have NO exotic birds here, so this is quite a treat for me. How great to be able see so many in one tree!! FAV!
@skstein Yes, - Nat Geo says" The curled white tufts at the base of the neck are formed by modified feathers. Their resemblance to a clergical collar led early settlers to dub tui the "parson bird" .."
What a cool looking bird.....I had never heard of it!! I would have taken it for a crow if you had not explained what it is, and pointed those amazing details on it! Love the necklace of feathers!
