NZ Tui by maggiemae

NZ Tui

In the Big City one didn’t expect to see many birds but here at the Resthome where we visited SIL who had a stroke 5 years ago, we counted 10 tuis in this one tree which was full of a deep pink blossom! I changed my settings to a higher speed and cricked my neck to get what I could!

These birds have a white bobble at their throats and these lovely markings of white feathers round their necks. They are native to NZ and I never thought I could get a good photo!

Three good things:
1. A great breakfast at a restaurant that didn’t cost a lot of money.
2. A lot of people in Auckland like to keep fit - running along pavements at lunch time, jogging in the Park, walking along trails.
3. Personal Hot Spot - not me but my phone!
great catch !

A great shot.

@grammyn Thanks Katy - our birds are not as exotic as Australia and other tropical birds but this one has great colour as well as a beautiful deep song!

Great capture! You got so much detail there and I love the colours! I remember those birds well, even though it's 25 years ago when I travelled in NZ!!

Great shot Maggie..

@julzmaioro Do you know the bright pink tree that these flowers are and the tuis just love them?
August 17th, 2015
The best Tui photo I have seen! Our late dog was called Tui because she was black with a white spot on her neck. How lovely for the residents to watch these birds sitting in this colourful tree. They have a nice song too..I didn't know that!

@happypat They all saw me taking photos of them but I don't think they had known of it, Pat One old guy with a walking stick came out and took some photos too. Another little lady came up to me with a smile and said hello and exclaimed over my camera - she couldn't remember the word. Sounds like me!

Fantastic capture - well done!! The tui is a beautiful bird and I love the way you have caught him!! Huge Fav!

@maggiemae It is the Taiwan/Taiwanese Cherry .. It is regarded as a bit of a pest as it can pop up in the Native bush where it is not wanted.. But the tui's love it and it looks so pretty, and so much earlier than the other cherry tree's

@julzmaioro Thanks julia - I want one! Need to know if it will grow down south though! Will investigate!

Sounds like a good day all around - inexpensive breakfast, visit with a friend and and a Tui photo!
August 17th, 2015
It seems that it is more of a problem in the warmer parts of NZ and Northland has banned the selling of this tree, it grows well in the Taranaki .. so it you can get hold of it should be ok..
August 17th, 2015
Brilliant! I like the details you've captured.

August 20th, 2015
@skstein Yes, - Nat Geo says" The curled white tufts at the base of the neck are formed by modified feathers. Their resemblance to a clergical collar led early settlers to dub tui the "parson bird" .."
