English Bay by maggiemae

English Bay

Vancouver showed us a good side when we arrived. The taxi was much cheaper than we were told, the green parks and sidewalk plantings gave the city an outdoor and groomed look.
Unfortunately there seems to be a lot of young people begging, others wandering around looking like tramps and talking to themselves!

Three good things:
1. Cool temps encouraged me in our dim and non-luxurious hotel room to turn what I thought was the heater on. After John mentioning that he was getting cold, he informed me I had turned the air conditioner on. But this mediocre hotel is right on English Bay, Vancouver.
2. Managed to find some tea bags in a city that seems to drink only coffee.
3. No free Margarita's any more! - thats a good thing!
welcome to Canada! sorry you have to see what we like to think as the bad side of a prosperous country (street people). but i hope the beautiful surrounding will offset that. can't wait to meet up with you tomorrow or sunday (more probably sunday, we'll give you time to rest).

@summerfield Thanks Vikki! The street people are probably everywhere in the world in the big city. There are also a lot (in this area) of shuffling old people talking to themselves and weirdo's! But then there are more normal people!

My phone # is; 604, 418-1165. Not sure if you have to use the 604 - that seems to be the area code.

I think it sounds like you're down to earth with a bump & living like the rest of us! Still a hotel on English Bay Vancouver is not to be sniffed at!

@happypat Its obviously a vibrant place here in this area - lots of trendy young people in half black stockings, boots and very short skirts!

A different world than the one you've experienced over the last few weeks. Have you got your land legs back yet?

@flowerfairyann Well I don't seem to be going up and down, Ann but its different walking on rough territory after 5 weeks of walking on floors!

Great photo...Homelessness as increased in all major USA cities and I believe it is the same in Canada's large cities...sad.

@seattlite I expect they can't get a job and choose this lifestyle to survive. They could always hop on a bus and go to a place where they can get any job!

I probably would never think of taking a picture like this in b/w, must say it turned out great.

Great result from that processed capture. We spent a week in that general area some years ago. Different season, not that many people on the streets.

Love the scene and the processing; they do have High Tea at the Empress Hotel, but you do need a reservation.

@hjbenson That's over on Vancouver Island, Harry and last time we were there we couldn't afford it!

Beautiful photo of your arrival. Glad the taxi was not too expensive. Oops on the A/C but that is figured out fast. You would be using the A/C here. It is hot, Summer weather here all the sudden. Nice to find some tea and guess you had enough Margarita's. So do you fly home from Vancouver? FAV
