Penumbral Lunar Eclipse by maggiemae

Penumbral Lunar Eclipse

The full moon known as this year's Harvest Moon will rise and will be shaded by a subtle type of lunar eclipse for some skywatchers in Africa, Asia and Australia.
The Earth’s shadow will darken the moon during the lunar eclipse at nightfall on Friday September 16 2016.
The eclipse gets it name from the outer part of the Earth’s shadow, which is known as the penumbra.  It was below the horizon in the Southern Hemisphere.
Well, whatever - I got a reasonable moon shot! I would imagine that this would look good on the Black!

Three good things;
1. Posted a photo on FB of the award that Johns father got (posthumously). It is crystal and needed light reflection to make it look good! Will go on here shortly!
2. Working with white balance is just as tricky as with ISO!.
3. Do appreciate all the great comments that my friends want to put on my postings! Its very easy to just click the ‘fav’ and move on… but still I appreciate those too!
Pretty!!

Like the pic... even happier to learn a bit more about lunar eclipses.

Great info about the Harvest moon & you got a great shot of it peeping through the cloud. I woke up at 2.30am & looked through our bedroom window. The moon was there in its full glory, so bright it hurt my eyes...I went back to bed!

@happypat Same here - I thought the outside light had been left on overnight!

Great shot and information...#3I try very hard to comment and not just click fav...but sometimes time doesn't permit :).
September 17th, 2016
@seattlite I agree with the time restraint and the very act of clicking does mean you have actually looked at the picture which is good to know!

You were so right. It is awesome on black I love the moon light reflecting off the clouds.
September 18th, 2016
@grammyn Thanks Katy - nothing special, I think but good for the shot on the day!
September 18th, 2016
@maggiemae well I think it's a little better than just a shot for the day. The moon is the moon is a moon but you have created a little bit of interest by including the clouds.

I almost went out to take a moon shot last night but I had to get up at 6 AM and I really didn't want to be over tired! So hopefully I'll have another chance tonight. Great shot!
September 18th, 2016
@olivetreeann Its only the 16th in your place and full moon is the 17th! You have a chance!
September 18th, 2016
@maggiemae We're on the 17th now- at 9:50 pm, but if the sky is clear, I should be able to get an almost full moon tonight if I feel like going out in my pjs!
September 18th, 2016
@olivetreeann Can't be cold though? Just pretend your pjs are the latest casual wear!
September 18th, 2016
@maggiemae (o: It won't be the first time I go out in my pjs to get a shot (and it won't be my last!). I've even thrown a heavy coat on with snow boots and gone outside in the dead of winter. I'm sure the neighbors think I'm nuts!

Cool image

Lovely capture. I didn't realize it was going to be an eclipse and blood moon, and wound up missing it. :(
September 18th, 2016
Such a beautiful capture, I learn so much from fellow 365's.....
September 18th, 2016
@skstein It was this penumbral thingy so the moon didn't really eclipse - it just got dimmer! You are off the hook!
September 18th, 2016
wonderful
September 18th, 2016
I thought it suppose to be a full moon as it is full moon festival when Chinese eat mooncakes under the moon, Not sure how it works when the moon is eclipsed, half the mooncake, I guess.
September 18th, 2016
@yaorenliu ... or because the moon is shadowed, they don't even know its a mooncake that they are eating - it could be a water lily leaf?

This has just reminded me that I photographed the harvest moon, but the pictures are still in my camera. I suspect they aren't worth processing .....

This looks fabulous against the black background, Maggie - so dark, velevety and mysterious!
