Alpine became hotter and hotter and we saw 100 deg F appear on the car’s dashboard. Our driver took us out over the rocky desert and canyons to Fort Davis,.
Fort Davis is one of the best surviving examples of an Indian Wars' frontier military post in the Southwest. From 1854 to 1891, Fort Davis was strategically located to protect emigrants, mail coaches, and freight wagons on the Trans-Pecos portion of the San Antonio-El Paso Road and on the Chihuahua Trail. This is the 1st Presbyterian church in Fort Davis.
Three good things:
1. A comfy seat to spend a few hours in while waiting for the 8.30pm train.
2. Learning about early American History
3. Didn’t see one bear or one snake - thank goodness!
Oh Maggie this is so beautiful! Yes South Texas is pretty unbearable temperature wise from May to November! The high altitudes in the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend are bearable, early morning. I'm glad you at least got to see a little bit of our state's beauty.
Lovely building, and set in such a majestic scene!
My absolute favorite part of Texas is Galveston ...Decades and decades ago, it was the first place where I saw the Gulf of Mexico, and I was quite impressed with its beauty!
What an amazing place to build this church, it seems to be growing straight out if the rock. Fave. I seem to be way behind looking at your travel photos, must really try & catch up!
This beautiful church seems to be growing straight out of these magnificent rocks (I'm using your words @happypat, because these were the first words that cam up to my mind when I saw this picture.
What a beautiful church and landscape. Are you wearing shorts? John must be hot it those jeans with that kind of heat. Going to backtrack and see if you are on a train trip.
Very dramatic image. I am currently listening to an audio book which takes the perspective of the Indian tribes during these so-called Indian Wars. That they would lose their land was inevitable as White settlers pushed west, but The Great White Father in Washington sure treated them dishonorably.
Amazing to see the church nestled right again st the rocks. Lovely shot. Have been looking through your latest journey, always great to see your shots, sorry for the lack of comments.
