Old Gold town cemetery by maggiemae

Old Gold town cemetery

A very small area now but once a hive of gold mining activity. The cemetery echoes the harsh times then - so many young men died from something or other - 19th Century.
The day was hot the fields gold, and the silence quite remarkable here. We are staying in a farmhouse just next door.
It is a fascinating era of history, for sure.

Old cemeteries are so interesting. We were at Ross the other day and looked at the historic cemetery there. It was very humbling as if you managed to live past 45 you were doing well in the gold rush days.

It looks like some very elaborate grave sites. Some of the newer ones are less ornate.

A marvellous image of this sad spot. The stories you read on old headstones are often heartbreaking...

@robz Yes, indeed, Rob! I like to think about them while I'm there so they know someone is thinking about them!

@happypat No sound except the whispering of the trees above these old gravestones!

@grammyn Yes, Katy - the old ones have angels and steeples and columns and inscribed flowers. The new ones are just rectangles!

@beryl There are quite a number of plots with wrought iron fencing and no stone at all - quite blank! A bit sad - or a 'lot' sad!

@julzmaioro A lot of these inhabitants came from Scotland and Ireland in the early 1800's! Hard to imagine!
