If you are ever lucky enough to see two large Red Deer Stags battling it out to become the dominant stag, and become leader of the herd, you will know they don't mess around. It's not some kind of fancy display and posturing, they are really fighting. They can inflict and suffer some quite severe injuries.
This one appears to be showing the wound resulting from such a battle.
