KNAP OF HOWAR by markp

KNAP OF HOWAR

Earliest standing house in Northern Europe. Although the roof is missing, these otherwise well preserved buildings were occupied by Neolithic farmers over 5000 years ago. Look closely and just to the right of the front door,( you can see the blue sea through it ) is a shadow, this is another doorway into another room about the same size as this one. The dark shadow at the very top right, is thought to be larder space.
This is on Papa Westray in the Orkney Islands.

My main album has something a bit younger,

Wonderful pov. The building technique and history of the location is fascinating.

Fantastic - and to think there was no machinery then. Really makes you stop and think about craftsmanship - what stonework. Wonderful shot.
