Hoy is the Orkney Island, certainly towards the north anyway, that most resembles the Highlands of Scotland, a lot of the other islands are more flat and rolling. However these cliffs at the beautiful Rackwick Bay, on the west coast, facing out into the Atlantic Ocean look truly stunning.
Bothies are scattered throughout the Scottish Highlands to provide shelter in bad weather, most are a fair distance from any other habitation and probably have saved many lives over the years. They are free to use, just leave them as you find them, taking all your rubbish with you. This is one of the largest I have seen, if needed you can fit a load of sleeping bags in there. There are tables, chairs, benches and a wood stove in there if you can find any drift wood. Bet it can be quite cosy on cold stormy night.
It also has a nice walled camping area, very useful when the howling gales rip in off the sea.
Off to the right of the shot, a 90 minute hill walk takes you to the famous Old Man of Hoy, a very tall sandstone Sea Stack.
