Arhhh! Now I see it is built on rocks! They must of had difficulty building it between high tides! Terrific view :) So now -are there puffins on Puffin Island?
@gilbertwood Haha. Thank you Denise. I did wonder if anybody would ask about the Puffins on Puffin Island. There used to be quite a few nesting on there, however problems with food supply but more importantly the fact that rats managed to get on to the island, and the numbers plummeted.
A concerted effort by conservancy groups and I think the island is now rat free again.
So I think at the moment there are just a few pairs of Puffins on there. There are though a couple of thousand pairs of Guillemots, and a lot of Razorbills, Cormorants, Shags and other seabirds.
An interesting thing about the Puffins on there, is that normally they nest down in burrows, safely away from predators. A very rocky island, and lack of suitable burrows, make the Puffins here lay their eggs in the cracks between the rocks.
@markp Thanks for all the great info! We had a similar problem here with foxes destroying our little penguins on our little island. Problem was solved by placing maremma dogs out there! Now we have a good population again! I have posted some photo/articles on this over time. Now i just need to see a shot of your puffins :)
