I was on my way back from the polls yesterday morning (Sat. 1/21/12) when I noticed the awesome light of dawn. Wanted to get to the polls early before the lines got too long... was actually up all night - didn't sleep a wink! Tried to capture all this glory with my cell phone, but it just wasn't doing the job. Hurried home, parked the car, ran in the house after my camera, ran back down to road to catch some of the awesome colors before it disappeared. Thunder storms were expected soon! While walking down the road, I realized that I didn't bring my extra battery in case the one in my camera died... in my rush to get some pics, I also neglected to change an important setting on the camera which I happily discovered captured more of the deep blues I actually saw with my eyes and the camera rarely caught!!! LOL! It was set to "tungsten" instead of daylight! But, this is actually what I saw with my eyes!!! When I was done shooting, I noticed that I did not change the setting and was expecting a bunch of crap when I downloaded the shots to my iMac... it was a pleasant surprise to see the deep blues! Will have to experiment with the light settings and breaking the rules later!!! This wide shot, I caught some of the power poles in it - thought it appropriate for the day. SOOC except for cropping off the dark bottom of the shot. The date is wrong since I also forgot to reset it when I had to pop the battery and replace it. Since the camera has been dropped a few times and sometimes the zoom sticks, that's the only thing that unsticks it.
Well Maggie, that's quite some some journey to get this image ..no sleep...no camera....no spare battery...tungsten settings.......but hey you got the all important $64,000 dollar image :)...the light is magnificent Maggie...I did view large and liked the poles and wires :) ...in my opinion this should make the PP..+FAV for me
I bet you were pleased to do a 'normal photo' after Cloe's week in the limelight
@phil_howcroft Ahh yes!!! I was pleased to shoot something normal after the Cloe series! You are very kind, Phil! It was an hurried photo shoot! and I was really not prepared in my rush. I'm very happy you like this pic. I was very excited with it and the others I got, too! PP? Doubtful but, it's okay! I've never made it yet, so why break a perfect record? LOL! Thank you for your very lovely, lovely comments, Phil!
Beautiful! Brilliant yellow and blue horizon. Oh how I miss a good thunderstorm . . . . . A lot of rain here, but not may thunderstorms. Great job, well worth the hassles.
What a beautiful shot. Your timing was right on and your camera did great to get what you saw. That is harder to do than people think and I am finding it true. It does come down to what photos look like when you download them. That is why we have to take a lot of photos or just get lucky.
@darsphotos Thank you so much, Darlene! You are so right about taking lots of pics and I am finding that experimenting with breaking the rules may very well pay off! I would never have set my light on "Tungsten" to photograph the dawn! It was a very happy accident!
What we don't go through to get a photo! Sometimes I'm so flustered afterward, I don't even care what I get. But this came out beautiful. I LOVE the blues of this. It's how I picture the early a.m. And it is a beauty enlarged. Did you make it to the election booth on time?!! :)
@karenann It was dark when I got there and dark when I left! This was on the way back home. LOL! I do hate to rush but, I did have to hurry before the clouds totally engulfed the dawn and swallowed it like the cat that swallowed the canary! Thank you for your comments! So appreciated!
@esmeanne Thank you so very much, Ann! You have a good eye to see that! There's more detail in shots to come from my rushed yesterday! LOL! Happy accidents are wonderful!
I love learning new thing like this! I tend to forget them...but I love it when it happens! Wonderful shot- such rich deep tones- lovely- well done Maggie Mae!
@heidievans73 Think about it... tungsten is supposed to filter out so much of the yellow tone we get from light bulbs... well, when you're shooting in the sun's direction - it's almost the same thing! Using the tungsten setting to shoot the dawn gave me truer deep blues around it with still having plenty of yellows in the shot. I don't think I'll forget this happy accident! LOL! Thank you for the comments, Heidi and the view! xo
Whatever your setting - fluke or not - brilliant lighting and colour! A little madness and mayhem and spontaneity sometimes brings on the best pictures. ;)
Very captivating. P.S. I found 365 project when I was looking on pinterest and clicked on a beautiful photo (can’t remember which photo now). I signed up that very day. I follow Jennifer McCannon and have noticed you pinned some of her photos. I image you were probably the one who pinned the photo that lead me to this great site. I just wanted to thank you for sharing. I have really enjoyed my experience here.
@copperheadglass Wow! Thank you for letting me know that! I really appreciate that statement! I love pinning my favs on Pinterest and showing off others' photos! LOL! I presently have 3 great looking boards now and may have to add another! I am so happy you're enjoying your time here, too! 365 has some very amazing photographers and even more amazing people to inspire you and share with! Your comments have made my day, Meredith! Thank you for sharing them with me! =)
wow what a gorgeous sky is right!!! the colors and lines in it are amazing! so glad your batt did NOT die on you and isnt it awesome when we make mistakes while shooting and they turn out WAY BETTER then we had thought?!!? great job here!
I remember reading in Bryan Peterson's book "Understanding Exposures" that breaking the rules and using the tungsten setting on the sky can give some splendid results. This magnificent photo proves that! Great job!
I bet you were pleased to do a 'normal photo' after Cloe's week in the limelight
You are always on my PP Maggie :)
Is very beautiful and inspired me a kind of inner peace.
