I hate that I cut off the end of the male's tail in this shot. Ack! They are so quick and move before I can get a good crisp focus, too!
This female wanted NO part of this squirrel destructed house, but the male kept leading her back over to it. She'd look at it, look inside and fly away. He'd lead her right back. This went on for a while until the male finally gave up! The one good house that hasn't been too destroyed by the damn squirrels, already has a nesting pair of bluebirds in it. I had six (6) good houses until the damn varmints chewed them up! There's also a pair nesting in the purple martin house! Oiy! My poor, poor bluebirds!!! I need to buy new houses for the them, AGAIN. Money is just really tight right now.
Maggie dear, tonight i am taking a night off from the comments because, thanks to you, i found the 70 songs (of my 18 years) that i could not hear, because i did not remember the names of the singers, but this evening i relax, and i will no go to bed at 2 as the other evenings for to watch all the photos, thank you very much, and this picture is gorgeous as always. sorry if there are errors good night
What a gorgeous photo, Maggie. They are beautiful birds and hope they find or build a home. Now I understand about squirrels and how destructive they can be.
Most people, I woild doubt this was a real capture! YOU, I don't. If you only knew how I have worked to try to get a good pic of even one bluebird entering, leaving, or perched at our houses! But they are so quick and flighty! A near miracle to catch 2 at once like this, in my opinion, at least without a bird blind setup!
@darsphotos Thank you, Darlene! They may find a home but NOT here. This year, I thought I might get three or four bluebird houses filled with nesting pairs, but thanks to the damn tree rats - that ain't happening. I have one nesting pair in the least destroyed bluebird house and one in the purple martin house. The other five houses are too trashed for a female to build a nest in them. Glad you understand why I don't think tree rats are such cute and cuddly little creatures. LOL!
@carolinedreams Janet @janturnbull calls them "tree rats" and they are, really! Thank you for your comments! Most appreciated!
@sharonaddison You should see Gina's @glb484 bluebird pics! They are fantastic, Sharon! Appreciate your lovely remarks! Thank you!
@meisen325 They won't find one around here, that's for sure! They'll either find a hollowed tree some where or find another bluebird house on somebody else's property, if they put any up. Not too many people put them up around here. Don't know why! I love my bluebirds and their cheerful little song!
@janturnbull Thank you, Janet! I love your description of the damn squirrels! LOL!
@dauber I really do know what you mean, RL! It is so difficult to capture these birds! I just stood there with my camera ready as they were going back and forth - hoping to get one good shot! I have a pic to upload tomorrow of two males fighting for the right to show their female this house. It's just sad! When there are six good homes to choose from, the female will pick one. Oiy! Thank you for your comments! Most appreciated!
@maggiemae I'll just have to replace each house, one a time as I can, Maggiemae. I will be getting a metal plate with the same size hole as the house and screwing it to the door - hoping it will prevent the damn tree rats from chewing the hole out. Thank you for the suggestion! Most appreciated!
@steveh Wow! Thank you for the fav and your comments, Steve! Grateful to have them, too!
@rach57 Thank you, Rachel! These are eastern bluebirds - you should see the western ones! They are more beautiful!
@wannabe That's right! Darn squirrels! Thank you, Catherine!
@johns366 What are you doing to attract them, John? They're pretty picky. They like fresh water near by, so I clean out the birdbath nearly every day and refill it. They don't eat bird seed! They like fresh fruit, nuts and grub worms, so I keep apples, oranges and whatever I have along with raw peanuts in a platform feeder for them. When I find worms in digging in the yard, I throw them up there, too. Thank you!
@karenann LOL! That makes every female bluebird! They don't like tree rat ruined homes. Thank you, Karen! Really appreciate your kind comments, as always!
Excellent, if them birds were british they would be off, my severe lack of bird shots means I am contemplating building both a hide and a stage in my garden. If ever the sun gets back aaround to us that is!
@grannysue Thank you, Linda! Appreciate your comments! They will find a hollow tree or find a bluebird house on someone else's property. The male will lead the female to a house or place to nest, but it's up to her whether she will build her nest in it or not.
@cmc1200 Grateful for your kind comments, Caryn! Thank you!
@yonnie You are too sweet, Yvonne! Thank you for your lovely comments!
@deburahiru Aww! Thank you, Deb! You made my night!
@redrucksack Thank you very much, Eva! Appreciate your comments and visit!
I so love the bluebirds! sorry about the rackin' frackin' varmints gettin' at your boxes. Have you thought about mounting them on poles instead? Not a guaranteed fix but it would make reaching the box more challenging. It's a great shot though.
I share your views of the squirrels ;-) You are so lucky to have bluebirds frequent your property and to capture such a great of not only 1 but 2!! I never even saw one! Actually I love this photo....natural and interesting, too! Fav.
@marlboromaam Well, my father-in-law just built a blue-bird birdhouse. Not much fresh water nearby. We do have a feeder with oranges, but that's for the Baltimore Orioles. I'll keep trying.
@purdey Thank you, Sharon! Appreciate your kind comments!
@msk1p2 Thank you so much, Sandra! Next time I buy a new house, going to get a square metal plate with the same size hole in it as the bluebird house. Then I'll mount it on the front of the house. Hoping this will prevent the squirrels from chewing the hole bigger and that it won't bother the blue birds. =)
@mantha Thank you, Sam! Grateful for your comments!
@cimes1 Thank you so much, Carole! I've worked hard to attract the bluebirds and I've had a few seasons of nesting pairs, so they come back. Really appreciate your comments and the fav! Grateful for them, too!
this is such a cute shot! I had no idea that the lady bluebird could be so picky about her home...sounds like humans!!! and the best part is that she won!
@claireuk Thank you very much, Claire! Really appreciate your time to view and comment on my pic!
@ruthmouch Thank you, Ruth! Grateful for your remarks!
@vickisfotos LOL! Yes, apparently, she chooses whether to build there or not. The male just seeks out nesting places to show her. Thank you very much, Vicki!
@paulineb Thank you, Pauline! Grateful for your comments!
Beautiful birds - great capture and back story. Funny about the tail - we see things like that in our own work.. But I never saw it when I looked. Nice work.
@malboromaam I told my daughter about the blue bird link you sent me. She's so excited. We also now have an anniversary gift idea for my in-laws. Don't tell them we're considering a nice bird bath. :-)
@princesicita Such lovely comments! Thank you so very much, Princess! =)
@johns366 LOL! What a nice gift idea, John! Glad your daughter is excited! Bluebirds are just blessings to me. I just love to hear their sweet, sweet song!
Fantastic capture!! I love bluebirds not only for their beautiful color, but for the great bug eaters they are. We once had a pair move into a bird house my father-in-law made, but the House Sparrows chased them away.
@skipt07 Thank you so much, Skip! Really appreciate your comments! You can discourage other birds from nesting the house by removing cleaning out the house and only letting bluebirds nest in it. I've had to do that to chickadees and house finches. They have their houses to nest in here, too. But the bluebirds won't nest in the finch houses! LOL!
@pointnshoot28 I appreciate your kind comments, Donna! Thank you very much! Don't be jealous though. If you lived here, you would have to work your butt off in the yards and always be on the lookout for poisonous snakes.
Your story of the female and male bird reminded me of when my mom and dad was working for a new house! haha This is such a vibrant and clear shot! Way to go!
@camisze Thank you so much, Cathy! Grateful for your comments!
@linzi76 You are too sweet, Lynsey! Thank you!
@glb484 Coming from you, a great expert, that's a big compliment for me, Gina! Thank you! They are picky. LOL! I hate squirrels!
