Remembering Sunday afternoons with my dad... by marlboromaam

Remembering Sunday afternoons with my dad...

This is a shot of a small cowboy sculpture that once belonged to my dad. It's now mine and I say that with pride. It's not a Remington but, he liked it!

During the last good years of dad's life, we spent Sunday afternoons together as a family, either at dad and mom's house or mine. We always had a good dinner and we'd often watch a movie after. Dad taught me to love westerns and have a deep appreciation for the western cowboy actors like John Wayne. I love them all! Dad had lots of favorite westerns and I had my own, but we had one particular favorite that we both loved and enjoyed watching together. Who knew the whole movie was available to watch on YouTube?! For you dad and happy father's day! Mom and I miss you and our Sunday afternoons together. Enjoy when you have the time! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czd7iRA-ga8
I love everything about your posting!

What a perfect Father's Day tribute to your pop, Mags. I'm sitting here in my recliner, with my laptop, three dogs surrounding me and watching John Wayne movies on my TV. Right now I'm watching BIG JAKE and when it's over I'm popping in THE SONS OF KATIE ELDER. I'll be thinking about you and your dad as I Duke Out! :-)

@cromwell Ha ha! A kindred spirit you are! Thank you so much for your wonderful comments! Really appreciate your support. Enjoy your movies and have a great father's day, Cromwell! Cheers! I may Duke out a little later myself... I think "Chisum" and "The Shootist" are due for another viewing! =)

June 17th, 2012
What a fantastic post, Maggie. I love this photo as it is something that belonged to your Dad plus it is a gorgeous photo. You write so well, you should write a book or make more of your movies that you have posted. I am in awe and sorry your Dad is gone as is mine. My husband is taking a well deserved nap and will be in the pool later as it will be 102 today. BBQ for dinner. My husband loves John Wayne movies as did my Dad. We watched a lot of westerns growing up. Bitter sweet to me as everything my Dad gave to me over the years was stolen 3 1/2 years ago, but i have the memories and photos. Have a great day. Hugs!!

@marlboromaam -- THE SHOOTEST is my all-time favorite John Wayne film. I'd hate to tell you how many times I've watched it. Duke really gave an oscar winning performance in that. Too bad he wasn't even nominated for it. I like to show that one to those who claim John Wayne couldn't act, he just played John Wayne. I make them sit down and watch this, and then SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON, and if time allows THE SEARCHERS. After that they always walk away with a newfound appreciation for Wayne. :-)
June 17th, 2012
@darsphotos -- Darlene, nobody can ever rob you of your memories. As the old Fred Astaire chestnut says "They Can't Take That Away From Me".
June 17th, 2012
@cromwell Thank you for your comments. Nice of you to remind me that they cannot take my memories or photos away from me. My husband loves that movie, SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON. He has so many old westerns and black and white movies. Have a great day.

@cromwell No doubt, a great film! But shoot - I think I love 'em all! LOL! I think you either love the Duke or hate him. He was beyond a doubt one of the greatest Americans who stood up for the founding principles better than most ,aside from the late and great Ronnie "Ray-Gun." God bless 'em!

@paulineb Amazing dads who loved the Duke! Thank you, Pauline! Appreciate your lovely comments very much!

A great tribute. The cowboy statues of West are wonderful. I remember on Sundays having roast dinners, drinking black coffee and playing chess. As I got older cigars were added to the mix until we all stopped smoking. My family laughs but know it the weekend cause I love cooking roasts.
