it would HAVE to be purple! One of my favorite wildflowers from a passion vine. They come up all over my yard and make big oblong green fruit which the critters carry off, so I never get to save some for seed. Durn tree rats! This first blossom I've seen was almost touching the ground. Made it hard to get a better perspective on it. There will be more shots of this blossom to come as more buds bloom out.
@sabanford The tree rats eat through netting. I tried that on my peach tree. Appreciate the suggestion though, Shirley. Thank you for your comments!
@rach57 They smell so nice, too - don't they! Another heavenly scent! Thank you for your lovely comments, Rachel! Always appreciate your visits!
@janturnbull Thank you, Janet! Appreciate your comments! I'm pretty sure you can buy the seed and plant another one. Or, perhaps pick one up at your plant nursery?
@kdimagery Oh dear! If I'd known it was your first time seeing one I would've waited for a much better, pic, Kd! Thank you for your lovely comments, as always!
Passionfruit here can be banana (invasive and outlawed) and the purple round one! We have had them in the property but have never seen a flower! This is positively beautiful!
@netkonnexion Thank you very much! Really appreciate your visits!
@maggiemae Thank you, Maggiemae! I've seen the variety from down under and the blossom has some noticeable differences but it's just as beautiful! I'll bet it smells just a lovely, too!
Wow, this is a beautiful flower and my favorite color. I have never heard of or seen one of these before. Love this photo of it, Maggie. Too bad the critters carry off the fruit.
@papalima I live in South Carolina, Patti. =) I know you can buy the seeds and plant some. Your nurser may some plants, too! Thank you for the comments!
I had no idea it was a wild plant! I have one!! BUT...I had to BUY it! It is loaded with buds about to burst...and I can't wait to shoot and post them! this is a great shot of it...makes me more anxious to see mine. I will save you a seed pod! no critters here that take mine
I've not seen passion flowers, only in photos, and this one is certainly beautiful. Gorgeous color and shapes! It has such an unusual, eye-catching form. Great capture!
@marlboromaam I viewed this In large this Is a fanstic photo and a beautiful colour centre of the flower you have captured outstanding Its a fav for me Gerry.
yes, it would be purple! What an interesting flower, I've never seen one. And, I'm glad it's native. We're attacking the bush honeysuckle again at work! That stuff is tough!
Last year, I noticed one of these plants growing out of a random sidewalk. I had never seen one before so I took a photo with my phone camera. It is so very striking!
My mom and used to se the phrase "purple passion" to describe big time passion. We'd say "I hate thse shoes with a purple passion!" haha I got a pic of one of these sat summer and even liked the angle but it was my p and s and I had no idea what I was doing so ISO was too high so it is grainy. You are lucky to have them in your yard but are you saying the tree rats et them before they bloom?,
@espyetta Great story, MaryBeth! We use that phrase around here, too. Thank you for your comments. Not exactly... the squirrels carry off the "fruit" before it can mature and I can save it for seeds. Same way they knocked all the peaches off my peach tree before they even got close to ripe. =( Netting doesn't work because they chew through it.
@marlboromaam I see now why people hate squirrels! You are from a rural area right? My mom got some of her interesting language from growing up in the hills of Kentucky...
@espyetta LOL! Born and raised in the USAF! I am a cultured, educated country gal. My mom is from a farm in the Smoky Mountains and my dad was from a farm in Georgia... I love the country and can't take the concrete jungle for very long anymore. Yep! Squirrels or "tree rats" are a problem, especially when they are over populated. They are destructive and ruthless - will ruin a garden, fruit trees, plants, flowers, hummingbird feeders and bluebird houses. Time to shoot some with bullets!
That is one interesting little plant! I love the colors and textures. Kind of reminds me of a little UFO. Maybe that alien in yesterday's shot came from here! haha
@aleksandra This is a wild vine "native" to the southeastern USA, Aleksandra. There are many varieties including hybrids that can be bought from garden centers. You may have a non-native wild variety or a hybrid. Thank you for your lovely comments, as always!
I have never seen this wild flower before. It is lovely. It looks almost like tines that are on a hay cutter. Not sure if I said that right ha ha! Beautiful shot, Maggie!:)
@marlboromaam Ho sorry Maggie, I just have a quick look today at my feed back and was trying to see more and more shots and I totally forgot to thank you.
