My Richard Petty signature style cowboy hat... by marlboromaam

My Richard Petty signature style cowboy hat...

Created and crocheted by yours truly, and made from plastic grocery bags. I don't recycle plastic bags - I REPURPOSE them by making "plarn" and using them to crochet useful items like hats, beach bags, totes, etc. It's FREE crochet material!!! Yarn is just so expensive these days. Even the feathers are made from the bag handles. Photo of NASCAR'S Richard Petty in his signature style cowboy hat here - https://www.gettyimages.com/photos/richard-petty-hat Tell me if you don't think my design isn't a good copy.

I have so many photos of crochet projects, I may have to start an album just for that reason. I might be able to back fill all those years in between when I left and when I came back.
Definitely in the same style. I like the color of yours better. You are so crafty.

THAT is so cool!

This is so cool... you are an artist in every way and ever so kind to the earth with your recycling of plastic to "plarn." Very impressed with your hat and your skill at creating it.

@k9photo Thank you, Kate! Took a lot of trial and error to get that shape. =)

@hunterjuly Thank you very much!

@kvphoto Aww! Thank you, KV! You are very sweet to say so.

Did you really used plastic bags for this one??? It looks like real fabric. What a fun project, it really works. How is it to wear it?
January 30th, 2021
@geertje My ex-boss loves it! He says it wears great and the larger stitch lets air in and out. He's the one who challenged me to create this hat for him. And, yes made from Walmart bags. Works up like raffia used to.
January 30th, 2021
How cool is that? Super way to repurpose plastic bags. Is the colour the original colour of the bags?
January 30th, 2021
@salza Thank you, Sally! Yes, ma'am - gray Walmart bags.
January 30th, 2021
How absolutely FABULOUS! Plarn. I've reused plastic bags since 1985. I would wash and then dry them on the fridge door. Now I have a wide counter behind the sink that has my bags a-drying. I've started to collect silicon bags as well. FAV!
January 30th, 2021
@joysabin Thank you very much! Not sure I've seen any silicon bags. How do you repurpose your collection?
January 30th, 2021
wow our supermarkets stopped supplying plastic bags quite a while back and most plastic bags you can get are biodegradable now thankfully. but this is very stylish, well done!
January 30th, 2021
You are very gifted! I love the shape and the color. I would have never guessed it was made with recycled plastic bags!
January 30th, 2021

You've quite a talent ! I'm a hat person and I think this is a great summer hat. Now, your next challenge, make one that's waterproof !
January 30th, 2021
@koalagardens Thank you! I'm happy to have a free material to crochet with. =)

@corinnec Thank you, Corinne! Anyone can learn to crochet. =)

Great hat. So creative.
January 30th, 2021
@wakelys Thanks, Susan!
January 30th, 2021
That is so awesome, you are talented. I made Christmas wreaths from plastic bags.
January 30th, 2021
This is wonderful, how many more talents do you have? It is a similar style as Richards but way prettier, yours is a great colour.
January 30th, 2021
@dutchothotmailcom Thank you, Esther! Very nice idea. I'd like to see your wreaths. =)
January 30th, 2021
@kjarn Thank you, Kathy! I think anyone can learn the skills of crochet. No talent here - just determination to learn and lots of trial and error. Gray Walmart bags. LOL! You can tell where I get most of my groceries.
January 30th, 2021
wow you are very clever maggie , are we going to see a pic of you modelling the hat :)
January 30th, 2021
@phil_howcroft Thank you, Phil! And, no. LOL!
January 31st, 2021
I have been meaning to learn to crochet for many years but ....... we don't get plastic bags in stores anymore here in Australia
January 31st, 2021
@kjarn But there's yarn and other things... string, jute, wire. I've even used twist ties. Be imaginative. You'd be surprised what you can find to crochet with in a hardware store. LOL!
January 31st, 2021
@marlboromaam awww go on , I am sure it will be a fabulous pic , guaranteed to make the PP :)
January 31st, 2021
@phil_howcroft Right, but I'll put on my clown face first. LOL! Besides, I'll have to crochet another one. This one belongs to my ex-boss now.
January 31st, 2021
@marlboromaam LOL, no clown face maggie, just you please :)
January 31st, 2021
@phil_howcroft We'll see.
January 31st, 2021
@marlboromaam ha ha , I've talked you into it maggie
January 31st, 2021
Sorry, I combined two statements into one. I bought crochet hooks, some patterns and wool many years ago in order to learn but there they still sit. I have no motivation or imagination.

Mentioning we no longer have plastic bags was just to let you know not an "I can't crochet as we don't have plastic bags" comment 😀
January 31st, 2021
That is so neat! And sure made a lovely hat.
January 31st, 2021
@kjarn Gotcha!

@milaniet Thank you, Milanie!
January 31st, 2021
How amazing, I would never have thought that possible! Love the hat and perfect model. We don't use plastic bags, so I cannot even give it a go ;-)
January 31st, 2021
Fascinating! I always love to repurpose when I can, but I've no idea how to do this. Must research...
January 31st, 2021
@ludwigsdiana Thank you very much, Diana!

@aikiuser Thank you, Jenn! Lots of sites show you how to make "plarn." Takes more time to make the plarn than it does to crochet with it. =)
January 31st, 2021
Holy cow!! This is awesome!!
January 16th, 2024
@rhoing Ha ha! Thank you, Thom. =)
