There was only black and white. "Learn to see in black and white when you shoot, then when you see the image - your brain can fill in the color..." So I recently read in a black and white photography book. I'm still not so good as many of my idols with black and white photography, but I'll keep working on it until I can no longer. Shot in monochrome mode - no conversion.
Good advice. I do believe looking or working with B&W photos, like in the old darkroom days helped photographers better see the light, pun intended, when they went in the field to take photos.
@ososki Thank you very much, Bill! I adore black and white before all else. It was my first course in college back in the mid 70s. I adored my professor too, even though he would rail on at you if you brought in a muddy b&w. He despised "flat" images - that is to say no pure white in the highlights or pure black in the shadows. =)
Do you know of Clyde Butcher? He is a well known Everglades photographer who only shoots b&w. He only shot with a large format camera until his stroke.
