Where It All Began

LAST Week (not this week - yes I'm behind) Northy @northy gave me the get pushed challenge
of "doing a collage in the style of David Hilliard..." She offered me alternates: "if not, another idea i had was to take pictures of things that look like letters, and create a collage to spell a word... alternatively, take photos of letters in different styles / fonts and make a collage like an anonymous note..."

I did start looking for letters and photographed a few. But I had to offer a rain check as I just didn't have time to finish and meet the challenge during that week. Since then, I thought of a set-up I wanted to do using my friends as models for the David Hilliard thing, but again didn't get it done before they left. Yesterday, looking through the pictures I took in Abilene last Saturday, I found a couple that seemed to echo Hilliard's way of capturing people disengaged from anyone but themselves. The other one I'm posting fits that better -- more than one person in the frame as a whole but completely separate.

This one appealed to me because I had just had Frank posing on this concrete slab -- sadly all that is left of the old theatre space where we performed together that magical summer of 1971 (dating myself, aren't I?) meeting and falling in love. Catching him as he came away from the slab, even though not well in focus, he seemed sort of Hilliard-like.

Here's the other:
