Frank Orazem Retirement by mcsiegle

Frank Orazem Retirement

The get pushed challenge given to me by Walks @ 7 @joysabin was to "...take a shot of something that makes you smile and then explain why." This is a first response and definitely NOT great photography. But it made me (and my mother, brother, and husband) smile and at times laugh out loud.

On Mothers Day, we were gathered at my house, and I brought out a DVD that was among the tapes and CD's my mom turned over to me in December, when she was downsizing to move to the apartment she lives in now. It was a recording of the 1990 retirement dinner and "roast" of Frank Orazem, a colleague of my dad's in the Agricultural Economics department at KSU, and a very close personal friend of his as well. That's my dad standing at the podium, among the speakers that evening. At this point which I snapped off the TV screen, he has been telling an amusing incident from the recent travel he and my mom made with Mr. and Mrs. Orazem to the Orazems' native Slovenia. Both my dad and Mr. Orazem have died, as has Mrs. Orazem. As poor a quality of video as it is, the DVD lets us see and hear my dad there at the podium. My brother had never seen this, I had only previewed a part of it once, and my Mom had forgotten she had it. Smiles all around. Priceless.

I put the DVD back in the machine today to get a picture of it for the challenge. I hope to find other smile-producing moments or items this week, and capture them with a bit more photographic finesse.
@joysabin Here is a first response to your challenge

@mcsiegle I have two philosophies about smiles, 1) we NEED more and 2) Smile it makes people wonder what you're up to. I love this because it has great love and appreciation behind. it.

Sounds like a great memory- and I know exactly how you feel about being able to see and hear your Dad. I still have a phone message my Dad left me on tape. Nothing special but it's wonderful to be able to hear him every now and then.
