The Worst Thing

Jaqueline asked me to show what I disliked the most about the past year. For me the worst was (and is again) coming down the stairs. The arthritis in my knees—particularly my right leg—made coming down the stairs painful. Going up isn’t fun, but the degree of bend in the leg is more extreme in walking down in a normal fashion.

So I end up going down one leg at a time. Lower the right leg and then bring the left down to that same step. Then lower the right to the next step and repeat all the way down. I’ve taken to going down backwards instead sometimes. It’s like going up, but in reverse, so quicker instead of one leg at a time.

Twice in this past year I’ve had improvement with the help of physical therapy, and then squandered it by not keeping up enoigh with the stretches and exercises. In September I had an injection in my right knee which helped quite a bit. But the effects were wearing off by the Christmas holidays, and that plus the busyness of the season saw me doing less or then none of the exercises. So here I am again. I’m going to ask my Dr. if it’s too soon to ask to go back to the orthopedist and have another injection.

Collage assembled hastily. I didn’t even sweep the stairs before snapping the pictures.

Your stairs are beautiful. I'm sorry that they pain you though. Sounds like you have the right knack for getting up and down!

@mcsiegle Your collage is so on point Mary, as Beryl I empathize with you. I have two full knee replacements too and still have days that it’s very painful to negotiate the stairs. I hope your dr. will help you soon!

I do admire you Mary. On Thursdays you are always so upbeat, happy and move fast to recover pigs. You never show discomfort or any signs of anything other than joy.

I do so hope you Dr will help you out ( but you gotta do those darn physio moves!!)

I also admire your bravery at taking this series of photos. ( I too love your staircase!)

I love this collage with all the lines and angles. I’m impressed you were able to take such terrific photos while actually descending the stairs. I can’t believe your knee is bothering you as much as you say because you never give any evidence of it when we get together for pigs. I’m also impressed you didn’t sweep the stairs first. It seems like you’re taking after @wakelys When she showed us her dust bunnies.

Great collage. I'm sorry for your pain. Don't forget to exercise. You can't negotiate with pain.
