Andrew gave me the same challenge I had given him previously—to make a still life that included all four of the elements of earth, air, fire and water. For some reason I got the odd idea into my head to show each element being held by something representing another element. So…the fan (representing air) held up between two halves of a rock, the tin box from Lufthansa airlines filled with fossils, the candle in a basket carved from a shell, and the bottle of Holy Water held by a candlestick. Please don’t read anything Satanic into the now-upside-down cross (as it occurred to me afterward that someone might.) If you must see it as symbolic, consider it a Cross of St. Peter. In reality, other bottles with a mouth the right size to fit were too dark to show water within and I came across the Holy Water bottle that conveniently showed the word “Water” prominently.
