Don’t ask me to estimate anything!

Northy gave me the get pushed challenge of "100." 100 is a big number to count up to and I'm famously bad at estimating anything. The closest I can probably come to 100 is "more than 100" and "fewer than 100."

So, we have a selections of examples here on this table. Starting with the easy ones...

Number of pages in the charming little Swedish book "Bille och jag." about a child and their doll. Easy. Fewer than 100!

Number of years since the book of Bible stories in German was published. It's in terrible condition and I'm going to be getting rid of it. There's no date -- pages missing, but pretty obviously more than 100 years.

Number of characters in the Oz books. The ones on the table are just five of the books Frank has. In the background you can see others. When he was a boy he used to be given a new Oz book every Christmas and he’s bought more as an adult. Just in the first book, “The Wizard of Oz,” there’s Dorothy, Aunt Em and Uncle Henry, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, the Cowardly Lion, the Wizard, the Witches (bad and good), Munchkins...(how many am I up to?) There’s gotta be more than 100, right?

Number of Little Blue Books. I think that the stack there is all we have, but even if there are another one or two hanging around, there are fewer than 100 here in our house. (The top one on the pile turns out to be something published by the Little Free Press in Minneapolis instead of a Little Blue Book.) BUT, if we’re talking about the number published by Haldeman-Julius Publications in Girard, Kansas – I cheated and did a Google search. Someone on eBay is offering the 1933-1934 catalog and it says they had 350 different titles available for 5 cents each. Definitely more than 100.

Numbers featured in the “You can Count on Monsters” book. Ha! It goes up to 100 exactly!

Number of little people (mostly kids) in the double page spread illustration “The Old Swimming Hole” done from a drawing by Harrison Cady. OK...there are a bunch of them, but I can’t be sure. They’re all over the page and not organized in straight lines. I can’t estimate anything...I’m gonna guess more than 100. What do you think?
