This is one of over a hundred marble quarries in Carrara. One of these quarries produced the marble for Michelangelo's David Statue. We learned that in 2000 years, they have only mined 6 percent of the marble in the region. But in the middle of the last century the technology changed so that they began using heavy equipment like the orange machine in the top right of the photo.
