Here is alternate shot from my self portrait session yesterday. Obviously very similar in pose, basically just from the other angle. Again, I wanted to make use of the natural light. Personally I prefer this one to yesterdays, it's very understated and I feel that type of mood fits my personality better. What do you all think?
b&w selfie with s.c. eyes - it just works. I liked the yesterdays shot a bit more though, due to composition. There should be a bit more negative space for you to look at. Now your nose is a bit cropped... But I love the dreamy feel in your eyes. I have an impression, that you have this mischievous cheeky side too, so I encourage you to do one more selfie and go crazy :-)
I love your eyes in this one, but I really liked the red on green of yesterday's. The sepia looks great though! And good on you for the close up! You'll notice I don't have a lot of those, it makes me uncomfortable!
@janmaki
I realized that the nose is too cropped but tell me more about this not enough negative space. Sometimes I have too much extra space, now it's not enough? What is middle ground for something like that? Mischievious??? ME???? NEVER :)
@pwallis
I guess this is a lesson in always saving the original. The main reason I don't like yesterday's is because I feel it is too edited, as I told @janmaki it makes me look yellow. The whole thing makes me uncomfortable, but I figured if I was going to do it, might as well go all out.
@mej2011 I don't know if there are any rules. But this side portrait makes me automatically think that you are looking at something and it just feels unnatural if there's none of that space. There was just enough in yesterday's shot, but you could have a lot more there too, for example double the width of this picture and it still would look ok. But, if you're facing the camera, the negative space is between the picture and viewer, thus you can crop very tightly if you want. I think the focal point in any portrait is the eyes. Position them correctly and everything falls into place. In yesterday's shot the eyes were horizontally in the middle and it worked. In this one they are too far to the left. Remember the rule of thirds too :-)
@mej2011 Try different crops and see how it feels. For example, I think this one could benefit from a crop from the right. That would move eyes closer to that magical 1/3 of a picture. Cropping queen, lol I'm hearing ABBA now in my head :-D
@janmaki
You mean if I were to have the original and crop more from the right, or I should crop this one from the right and cut off my hair and ear? I hate ABBA. A friend of mine made me go see the Mama Mia movie a few years back, and it was torture!
@mej2011 whaaaat? I loved that movie! Probably because we got married in Santorini though. @janmaki you never critique my shots anymore! I feel all left out:(
@mej2011 yeah crop off the hair and maybe a bit of ear too (somehow it's ok to crop ears but not noses... go figure...) ... not ABBA fan either, luckily I have never been to that Mama Mia torture.
@pwallis
I'm not a fan of musicals. Unfortunately, I seem to only gravitate towards story lines that are plausible. The idea of random singing and dancing,just is too phony for me. You should feel honored that Jani doesn't critique your photos anymore, you must be doing things right.

And of course these are all just my opinions :-)
Okay, I will try and not be a cropping queen from now on. Thanks!

Of course it is okay to crop ears, Van Gogh started a trend. lol.
Okay now you're making me feel bad. lol. I suppose its just that since I don't do it, I find it odd.
Did you just call Paula a man????????
Thanks so much Angelina! Interestingly, I was listening to Celtic music when I took this photo.
Who cares what friends think! The important thing is what does Pickle think of it?
Then it is okay!
Thanks Billie!
