I like the idea of the bright red but there are quite a bit of contrast in terms of shadows? I'm definately not an expert but I wouldn've considered some version of a light box to get rid of this? Alternatively a flash might also have lightended the shadow? Or was this the idea?

I've never used a light box, so I don't know how well it would work. A flash would have made everything lighter, but I probably still would have had some shadow issues left. I am trying to work on camera settings and getting everything "right" in camera.
I recently bui2lt myself a (carton box) "light room" to play around with. Google it - ( http://ohsheglows.com/2011/01/26/how-to-make-a-light-box/) You can do it quite quick & cheap. Using it does lessen the shadows quite significantly. I was also quite reluctant to add a flash, but then added a Flash White balance with it & got some surprising results.
Great detail on the strawberry. Personally, I find the white distracting, I think it would have worked better if the strawberry was on the table. Another way of lightening the shadows is to use something white to bounce the light onto the subject - anything, like a white tray or piece of card, can be used.
