Still plucking away

Another shot from yesterday's hawk viewing.

Editing consisted of a small crop in Ribbet. Aperture Priority mode. 55-200 Lens.
Well captured! Love it as the photo represents the Circle of Life. Nature is a harsh mistress.

So, I saw this in critique-me, so I am going to do that. You'll have to judge if I am worth to do that or not.

I like the subject. Birds of prey eating prey are always cool. I also like the capture of the eye of the bird.

Composition I think is a little weak. I would recrop this so that the bird is more towards the bottom right, or right side of this scene. Often, it is best to have a gaze facing into the dead space. Here, the left is so tightly cropped that it feels weird. My eye wants to know what the bird is looking at.

Also, the foreground is a little too much, I find myself focusing more on the tree branch instead of the subject of the bird. Crop out more of the bottom right, open up the left a little, and leave a little room up at the top for the bird. It looks like it's about to hit it's head on the top crop. And feels a little cramped.

Bokeh is cool, and your image is pretty crisp if not a little contrasty. Also, white balance may or may not be an issue here. It looks slightly blue to me, but that might be the light you were getting from the time of day and reflection of the snow. If it isn't and you were shooting in shadow, I would consider that as the cause of the bluish color reflected in the feathers under the bird on the keel.

Another reason to crop the image? That white wood horizontal line on the right side. Completely clashes with the rest of the image. The eye wants to see the brightest spot on the image. In this shot, it is the snow on the branch, and the vertical line of the wood.

So, recrop would be a good idea.
