@dridsdale This is a Northern Flicker, a member of the woodpecker family. The red spot on his head and the black vee on the neck are his most common markings. This is all coming from a girl who knew nothing about birds before I started 365 - now I can recognize a lot by their call! :)

Your Northern flicker is beautiful! I can see just a hint of yellow, so I assume that your area has the yellow-shafted flickers (Mine does also!). I've never gotten this close to one; awesome pic!
