Last year or so, I went through a teachest at Mum and Dad's place and found this jewellery box. Dad had made it at high school when he was 16. But the lid wouldn't stay up, as the chains on the sides were broken, so I left it with him to fix.
The other day, I picked it up and brought it home as Dad mended it. Doesn't it look lovely? Now, they don't teach kids to make stuff like this anymore... wish they did.
Writer, poet, artist and prolific reader.... that's me.
I'm a collector of books, vinyls, coin purses and strange handbags... that's me too.
Otherwise, I love...
It is one of those lost arts, and it's a shame. Your Dad did a fine job with this one and it is so neat that you have it to admire. I have acquired a huge Library table my Uncle made when he was in high school. It sat in my Grandparent's home until they passed away in 1985, and then my Uncle got it back. When they passed away I bought it at their sale, and now it is back in the same house it sat in all those years.
@digitalrn Oh! The table sounds lovely! It's true that schools just don't teach kids how to make things anymore.. not useful things anyway. When I went to high school, we made a drawing board - which I still have - and in home economics, we had to sew our own apron before we were allowed into the kitchen, otherwise we were failed. Now? The kids are taught to sew a pillowcase.... a pillowcase? How basic can ya get?
No, he didn't. But the best thing is that he can turn his hand to just about anything and make anything; which is great! :D
