If anybody had spotted me shooting this jumping spider, he would have seen a big, stupid grin on my face! XD
This little guy's only 0.5cm (0.2in). Isn't he cute!? Look at those awesome, big, round eyes! Jumping spiders don't spin webs. They hunt prey. And so they have excellent eyesight, are very active and very fast. This one was super curious about me. Every time I moved myself to get a good position for my lens (because I needed to shoot him between the branches and leaves), he would stop and turn around to look at me. He was so adorable!
If you view the large version, you might be able to make out my selfie silhouette (against the blue sky) reflected in his eyes. 8D
Nice one Livia! Love the silhouette reflection in the eyes! You must have been a sight to see...were you close enough for him to jump at you? Loads of fun!
@janturnbull They have 8 eyes, but the biggest ones are the 2 right in front. In this shot you can see only 4 but he has 4 more eyes towards the back and top. 8)
@mikegifford I had fun! 8D Yes, I was definitely close enough for him to jump at but I don't mind these tiny jumping spiders, so I was okay with that. (Other spiders, I can't even bring myself to be close enough to them to shoot because I find them scary. XD) My macro lens has a focal length of only 30mm, which means I have to get ridiculously close to get a good shot. I didn't know at the time, when I bought the lens. 30mm is good for macro shots of objects, not insects. It's usually recommended that people start with a 100mm macro lens. That way you don't have to get so close and risk spooking or agitating the bug.
You do great macros!
I love this. He looks adorable! When we dissected spiders in class, we got a good look at them in the microscope, and up close they are really not scary. Sort of cute, actually!
Actually his eyes look quite cute compared to the rest of him, almost like a cartoon characters. Jumping spiders, seriously scary. You did well to catch him before he moved again.
"What big eyes you have".."So I can see you better" this is something out of Grimms fairytells..Red Ridinghoos. you got yourself a real great closeup and just look at those eyes!!!!!!
Instant Fav! These are soooo little and you did a great job capturing him. I love the light, composition, clarity...and they do turn as you move...but that is good since their eyes are the stars of the show! I wish I can see one of these when I have my good camera...last time, all I had was my blackberry or my tiny cheap p and s....So I could not get a good pic. This is gorgeous and wonderful!
Amazing how many of us would dare to approach very close to a spider to make a good picture. Spiders are creepy to me, yet I was kneeling in front of a fat spider a few days ago? Fabulous details and great crop
It takes true talent to make an icky jumping spider look so adorable! I could not get that close to one without flailing my arms around every time it moved. I love this picture! Fav!
OMG after all of this time i just realized i wasnt even following you back!! When i went to fav this pic.. i just noticed! you musr think im stuck up!! lol! truley an oversite for way to long!!!,,,You know i love you Livia!! :)
Nice composition : strong diagonal, spider on the RHS, with the viewer looking left to right, with restricted depth of field drawing the viewer to the off-centre pin-sharp subject.
Implicit humour too, with the bug-eyed spider just sitting there, almost cartoon-like.
Wowee! He's so cute with those big shiny eyes! What an expression! I didn't think spiders could have expressions! I love him! Cool composition and super excellent details! :D
Fantastic! I agree with the above - I would have never called a spider cute until I saw your pictures. He is cute and has wonderful eyes :-). Awesome shot.
This is incredible, Livia! Looking at your pictures sometimes it is hard to believe that they are not shot with a DSLR :D
The little guy is so cute! :)
awwwww! He's so cute! I never would have EVER said that before 365...I had a brief relationship with a jumping spider...for a few days while we house-sat for some friends. I'll never be the same. :)
This is an EXCELLENT shot! fantabulous macro! I keep looking at your description on the side "no DSLR or tripod" - ah-mazing! You are one talented woman!
A great, big, kind-of-hairy, adorably big-eyed, jump-for-joy "THANK YOU!" to everyone!
I'm so glad you've enjoyed seeing this cute jumping spider! Before 365, I wouldn't have thought of a spider as cute. But seeing these tiny ones through my macro lens has changed my mind. I really like seeing their big round eyes. They really are very curious creatures, always looking at everything around them, always staring wonderingly at that big old camera lens pointed in their direction. It sounds silly to say this but I very nearly wanted to take him home with me, he was so cute that I didn't want to say goodbye. XD
Thank you so much for stopping by, for leaving a comment, for the faves. I appreciate your support very much because it is a source of great encouragement to me. Again, thank you!
I know i'm a bit late seeing this (no internet for 3 days due to storms!) but this is an amazing shot......will have to add to that massive pile of faves you have there:)

Fascinating stuff, isn't it? 8D
@vickisfotos He has 8 eyes and you can see 4 in my shot. The two front-facing ones are the biggest. 8) Here's an article on jumping spider eyes: http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2012/01/27/jumping-spiders-unique-vision-revealed/

Excellent photo. Wish I'd taken it :-)
