When does a jumping spider not look like a jumping spider? When it's a male Wide-Jawed Viciria. 8D
He looks more scorpion-like than spider-like. Look at those legs, and that super skinny abdomen. Even though he was barely 1cm (0.3in), I found his appearance intimidating. See what looks like two big hotdogs protruding from his mouth? Those are his jaws! So now you know the reason for his name.
I'm sorry that this shot is not as good as it should be. Firstly, he was on the underside of a leaf, and severely backlit by the sunlight on the leaf. (Hence the bokeh, haha!) I brightened the area around him as much as I dared in post-processing, and a lot of detail was lost.
Secondly, he was some distance overhead. I had to stand directly under him (all the time praying that he did not decide to jump on to my head), stick my arms up as straight and as far as they would go, with my camera held out by my fingertips. Not a steady position at all, so this shot isn't sharp.
But I hope you can still see that he has a jumping spider's typical eye arrangement, with the two front-facing ones being the largest.
To be perfectly candid? I found him somewhat scary. And having to take shots of him in that manner was a little traumatic. XD
Glad he's a jumping spider and hence quite small. He would be seriously intimidating if he was larger! I really like his colouring. Nice shot all the same. :-)
You're much braver than I! Don't think you will ever find me under a spider holding my camera with my fingertip. I would need a drink after this - a double maybe! ;-)
Well done! I know what it's like trying to shoot upwards and balance is everything! Imagine if he had disappeared from your view finder and you would immediately think of your hair!
You don`t have to excuse, the pic is great . I always try to teach children by art lessons, if something turns out different as you have thought , change you thoughts. Great capture of a very interesting guy.
He's gorgeous in a scary sort of way. Nowhere near as friendly looking as your regular jumping spiders. Hope it wasn't so traumatic that we'll never see your arachnid friends again!
that is the kraziest spider i have ever seen! lol. I think he is part alien! haha. Have you ever had one jump ONTO you when you get so close when shooting?!!?
Your way braver than me Livia, having him hover me like that would more than likely see me running away screaming! =) for some reason the jaws on him reminded me of Davey Jones from pirates of the carribean?! Ha! =)
His hotdog face reminds me of that octopus face guy in Pirates of the Carribean movie. I have not seen whole movie, but bits and commercials...and this spider looks like him. Haha
You are incredibly brave to shot this very scary looking and sounding spider.... so very well done... the very thought of doing what you managed to do makes me tremble... yikes!!!!! ♥
