"I don't belong in the world."-Mary Henry /Carnival of Souls 1962
The movie that started my love affair with the horror genre was Carnival of Souls. ( 1962).I must have been about six or seven when I saw this movie on TV.I had an Uncle who was one of those curmudgeonly types who really knew nothing about kids.He was visiting us one Saturday, sitting on the couch ,drinking a beer and watching television.I walked in and asked him what he was watching. When he told me it was called "Carnival of Souls",I of course, thought the movie would be about games, rides and prizes.Nope.Long story short the plot involves a woman who crashes her car, goes over a bridge and sinks into the river. She escapes and climbs out.But everything has changed! The streets are almost empty and everyone she comes across has these hideous dead stares! (Oh such really, really bad special effects.I laugh now to see the cheesy black painted circles under everyone's eyes.) Turns out,of course.......bum bum bum bum.....she is really dead!! She never really left the river at all!I was glued to this movie. It scared me,sure.... but it was thrilling! Thank you dear, inappropriate Uncle John for not knowing enough about kids to change the channel.:)
