Dia De Los Muertos

"Life is eternal, and love is immortal,
and death is only a horizon;
and a horizon is nothing save the limit of our sight."
--Rossiter Worthington Raymond
Day of the Dead (Spanish: Día de Muertos) November 1 and 2 is a Mexican holiday observed throughout Mexico and around the world in other cultures. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died.It is a joyous holiday,not to be confused with Halloween.The images in the collage reflect the following:The people of the state of a Michoacan in Mexico believe that souls of their ancestors return on the wings of the Monarch butterflies that migrate to the mountains.They arrive in time for the Day of the Dead.I took the images of the Monarchs,the children and the decorative paper flags ( Papel Picado) while in Mexico.I bought the Catrina Doll ( a symbol of the holiday) in Mexico .Flowers are also an important symbol of the holiday and finally,a gravestone .In Mexico people spend the night celebrating in the cemeteries where their loved ones reside.

Wonderful collection of images and thanks so much for the information too. The Day of the Dead is virtually unknown in NZ but it seems such a lovely way to celebrate loved ones lives and love.
