I am surprised that you say clematis because if it is ....it grows wild all over the trees @bazman any ideas? I thought perhaps something to do with all the cottonwood trees?
The clematis I know as clematis paniculata - Autumn clematis, it blooms here in the fall (obviously!) and is often fragrant, with a small, whie, cross-shaped flower - it's very drought tolerant and vigourous, it may be considered an invasive weed in some areas. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it thriing, covering trees to the point of threatening to choke them out in Wyoming after a drought that was in at least its second year. Sorry abiout spelling, my eyelids are heavy.
@nanderson@therubysusan - yes - it could be clematis - I have one I had to pull out because it was too invasive - and Nancy - yes - in this area. Of course it could be something else, too. Will be a treat to see when it leafs out.
