The Frelinghuysen Arboretum was originally the private country house of George Griswold Frelinghuysen and his wife, Sara Ballantine Frelinghuysen. Boston architectural firm Rotch & Tilden designed the mansion, an example of Colonial Revival architecture an English country estate. It is listed on the State and National Register of Historic Places.
