Bikes... by northy

Bikes...

I do not love this shot... I like the concept, but something is lacking in the execution... these bikes are parked along the street outside my office, and I expect I will have many opportunities to try this again, so any feedback would be more than welcome! Oh, and I did try cropping the cars out from the background, but I didn't like the result ;p
Great line up for bikes… I know what your saying about the execution, I try to capture bikes and it doesn't happen they way I want it to either. love the cars approaching

i like the shot! i like that we see both the sidewalk on one side and the cars with the canuck headlights on the other. i wonder if there's a way to do that and still shot a bit more of a side view of the bikes?

@sunnygreenwood hmmm... i took one on a slightly different angle that gets more of a side view, but it seemed to be even more lacking than this one... maybe i need to try an angle in between... i'll give it a go next week some time... tx for the suggestion!

ps - are canuck headlights different from other headlights?

@northy yes in canada there are day lights but not in the US as far as i know.

I don't dislike the shot, but I agree there's a better shot of it in your future. Maybe next time try a lower POV and see how that turns out. I know exactly what your talking about, Northy. There's a Harley Davidson dealership near me and they line up all these bikes in a row outside. Everytime I drive by and see all those hogs glistening in the sun I'm compeled to shoot it. I have yet to be satisfied with any photo I've taken, but I'll keep trying until I get "the shot".

@cromwell that's a good suggestion... tx!!!

I like the concept too - I was going to suggest a lower pov too, as Cromwell did @cromwell - I've got one that worked (and I didn't put up here - too many other pictures from that day) which had a lower pov, so you got a back wheel in and the handlebars - you might try getting a passer-by too

I've tried this shot myself and it's never worked for me, This is great. I love the bokeh in the background and actually think the cars add something xx

Spooky, I have been trying for a bike shot as well this week but didn't get anything I was happy with. As already said maybe a lower POV and slightly more to right to get a little angle to it, maybe try and get some people legs in the shot as well.

I like the concept, I like the cars in the background...so keep those! For me I think it is almost too monochromatic without being black and white..it seems to lack depth a bit. What if you sat on the ground and looked up slightly but still looked down the line of bikes for a different perspective? You would be at a bit of a different angle though...I don't know keep trying, there's a better pic in there somewhere. That is a lot of bikes!

That's a lot of bikes!

I really like that you kept the cars in the pic. I would try an angle more to the left so you can see more of the side of the bike and tire. I think the issue is there is no definition in the various bike parts (and therefore looks all a mass of metal). I've tried a similar shot and have been frustrated with the results! ;-)

I like it just the way it is! When you're out there, fix them all. Line them up all nice...OR...there is a row of rent-a-bikes across the street from the Hockey Hall of Fame :)

@sunnygreenwood we have daytime running lights for safety...never heard them called Canuck lights though! lol

@shutterbugger hee hee... that's what i liked about them... they weren't lined up nice at all... they were all higgledy piggledy... but there was something orderly about them nonetheless ;p

I tried a shot like this in Chinatown and got the same feeling as you.....frustrating. Good attempt :)

Lovely focus and DOF again!

Just maybe... Lower POV from the traffic lane focusing partially down the line and still waiting for a car or two. Make sure you do not stay out there too long!
