Steelworkers Union by northy

Steelworkers Union

This strike shack has been set up along a main road forever... I have never been able to figure out why they are/were on strike... some years ago I used to see one or two picketers hanging out with signs... in the winter, they would set up a fire in the can on the left... haven't seen anyone there in a while, tho'... this shack (and another one behind it) appear to be the only remnants of some long forgotten cause...

For the street photography now challenge:

"Take to the streets! Get Political" originally set by Mimi Mollica

http://365project.org/discuss/themes-competitions/13500/street-photography-now-challenge-week-11

ps - not my usual sort of street shot, but the only thing I could think of that I could easily get to on the weekend (it's in my end of town near all the big box stores)

pps - I downloaded the trial version of nik silver fx pro 2 and I think I'm in love :)
Cool shackity shack, was it unlocked? Never use Silver FX, I have it but just do everything in Lightroom

Must have been cold in winter, particularly if they were picketing or had been locked out by the employer
July 21st, 2012
Great one for the challenge, but now I really want to know what they were striking over......
July 21st, 2012
Interesting shot. Great for the challenge - the brazier reminds me of the miners strikes here in the 80's.
July 21st, 2012
It's a wonder it's not been removed by the council! Did they have a building permit? I would bet not!
July 21st, 2012
Cool shack, love the tones
July 21st, 2012
Very interesting shot!
July 21st, 2012
Interesting...I enjoyed the read. This is a great photo for the challenge.

@38mm Jase... you know the marshmallow test? where they put a kid alone in a room with a table and one marshmallow sitting on it and are told not to touch the marshmallow? well, i'm the one who would follow those instructions... ;p I will check the door next chance I get!

@peterdegraaff yup - that stretch of the road would be FRIGID!

@jantan tx Jan... I want to know what it was about too! I did a bit of googling earlier, but came up empty...

@maggiemae ha ha ha! prolly not... who knows... but, yeah - i often wonder why those shacks are still there... frankly, I thought the "strike" whatever it is for, was still on...

July 21st, 2012
@northy I'm the kid who having eaten mine, would have stolen yours :)
July 21st, 2012
I am the one who takes the marshmallow and then has a lengthy reason why I was entitled to it :)
I had the best spn idea in my head, I knew of a great spot with a great message.... went to take the photo and they'd cleaned it up, now I got nothing!! Love the b&w and its a cool little building.
July 21st, 2012
Great little shack :) your processing is great. It does seem stange why they just left the shacks behind.
July 21st, 2012
I like the processing here. I don't really process much, enhance/ brighten in iPhoto. I have Photoshop so probably should play with it more. Nice shack here! I haven't a shot for this spn challenge sadly.
July 22nd, 2012
Great b&w
July 22nd, 2012
Love all the different angles in this - looks very 'thrown together'.
SFX2 is fab software. :)
July 22nd, 2012
@northy It definitely not the little old place out back, ie the lurve shack, bet people can still get together
July 22nd, 2012
Very cool shot!
July 22nd, 2012
Awesome... You gotta see what's in there, you know you do :p
July 22nd, 2012
@38mm @binny it may be a couple of weeks before i get a chance to go out that way again, on my own... but i will be sure to check it out and get back to ya'all!
July 22nd, 2012
@monika64 dang... hate it when a brilliant idea goes belly up!

as for the marshmallow... i don't like them anyway... says she flipping her hair and stomping off in a snit...

;D

@38mm
July 22nd, 2012
@northy hahaha, you'd eat my marshmallow though if I shared it with you?
July 22nd, 2012
@monika64 actually... i really don't like marshmallows and have no problem resisting them... now if we were talking 'smores, it would be a whole 'nuther story ;p
July 22nd, 2012
This is so interesting! Black and white suits it well.
July 22nd, 2012
Ha - I don't know how that happend but I've now got B52's Love Shack swimming round in my head! Great shot
July 22nd, 2012
great shot, you have found something very interesting, i like the B&W
July 22nd, 2012
Great shot for the SPN challenge. Saw your comment re the software, and I also read your earlier post re Lightroom. Will have to have a look at it.
July 22nd, 2012
great b&w shot Northy!
July 22nd, 2012
I like the different surfaces and textures! Cool and interesting shot. 8)
July 22nd, 2012
Yes.. What a beauty. Well spotted
July 22nd, 2012
that is quite some little shanty, complete with it's own trash barrel too. the door looks super narrow. this works well for the theme!
as far as unions, i don't know about there, but here they are doing everything they can to do away with unions. you know, big business.....screw the little guys so the management and owners can make bigger profits. there are several factories here in my town where they took out the union and now the workers barely make minimum wage.
July 22nd, 2012
This looks awesome in B&W
July 22nd, 2012
Perfect for both the theme and for B&W, looks like they were getting settled in for a long struggle.
July 22nd, 2012
Wonderful lines and textures!!! Enjoyed the story!
July 22nd, 2012
love the rickety nature of this - great textures and lots to look at...cool shot
July 22nd, 2012
Looks like a little shanty town shack on the outside. Knowing unions like I do, I bet the inside looks like a swanky Las Vegas hotel room (lol).
July 23rd, 2012
@aurorajane @peterdegraaff you guys are making me giggle... it never occurred to me to think of the B-52 song in connection to this photo... the song swirling around in my mind is blue sky mine by midnight oil...

July 23rd, 2012
Great little shack - must try out that Silver FX software.
July 23rd, 2012
Love the randomness of the structure of that shack. Lots of texture xx
July 23rd, 2012
Lyn
wonderful for the theme. . .I love the way you've found an idea that works for you for the challenge!
July 23rd, 2012
So you have fallen for Silver Efex Pro - It was love at first click for me too! I like this shot, there is a story there and I like to imagine what it might be (although you have told me!)
July 25th, 2012
Great shot Northy, i love these kind of shots
July 26th, 2012
