this was one of those stupid things that popped into my head to try... there... done... moving on...
incidentally, this is a drop of glycerin, not water... sitting on a bit of glass a foot or so above the chess board... someone mentioned some time ago that glycerin is more apt to hold the droplet shape...
and it really was a very easy set up... just took a bit of experimentation to figure out how big the drop should be (the smaller the better) and how high the glass it was sitting on should be off the floor (higher is better)...
it's late, i'm cranky and so i'm going to do you all a favour and call it a night... catch up with ya'all tomorrow!
@bernicrumb tx Berni - I got it at a drugstore - just a basic generic product that was sitting on the shelf... Can't imagine you'd have any difficulty finding it where you are :)
I
Incidentally - if you can't find it, you could try adding sugar to water... When I was googling for info on this type of shot that was mentioned once or twice as a way to help keep a drop together...
Very impressive. Maybe we will get indoor shots only over there next few days - too cold for sensible people to go out in your town at the moment? Take care!
feeling a little sheepish here folks... it didn't occur to me initially, but now i'm thinking ya'll thought this was an action shot where i caught the drop mid-air or something... which it isn't... just a boring drop of drugstore glycerin on a piece of glass perched above the chessboard... sorry if i mislead you - that was never my intent :( please feel free to de-fav...
@northy heehee!!! I love your 'confession', but now I have to confess that I didn't think about HOW you did it, only that I really liked it! Mmm...perhaps I am not thinking deeply enough? It's a great composition!
I still think it's fantastic! I'd certainly not have thought to use a piece of glass to support the drop of glycerin. :-) The final effect is terrific, and I'm keeping this on my Fave list.
@northy And having said that, I noticed I hadn't actually faved it before, even though I'd meant to. So you actually got an extra F as a result of you honest :-D
You created the illusion that it was in mid air - that's all that counts! My daughter once won a prize for entering a shot for the category of "Balloons" and there wasn't a balloon to be found in miles! But the viewer was convinced that there were balloons - that's the beauty of photography! Fave stays.
we all had a spate of doing that glycerine shot when I was here before. And it was something I didn't get to work on the Sony so it was in the back of my mind to try again. But you've somewhat blown that idea out of the water with this take on it
I wish I had seen this before doing my shot last night... i battled for ages to try and get the water drops to form well and gave up in the end and just shot them in irregular shapes! lol... great job! Fav
Love it. And thanks so much for telling us how you did it. That's so generous.... I'll be trying something similar in due course now I'm back on the case!
