i used the macro lens, hence f/16 still gave me a fair bit of blur in the background... i played around a lot with all three components of the challenge
-- placement of the light and shutter speed - how much light, what direction... i wanted the focus of the light on the penguin... i wanted some light on the sabre tooth to help make him recognizable despite the dof, but i still wanted the feeling he was coming out of the shadows... i did comparatively little in post processing with respect to the lighting (or any of the image for that matter - other than converting to black and white)...
-- aperture - i experimented with a number of different f stops to see what worked best for getting the cat to be recognizable, but still somewhat blurry...
-- positioning of the two figures relative to one another... needed that sense of impending doom...
so there ya have it... happy for any and all critique if you're so inclined...
tx all for the lovely comments on my recent creepy shots... why i find those fun to do is beyond me ;p
whew! that was tiring effort. we need to have a drink of hot chocolate now! but it's an awesome composition! so many challenges, so little time!
i didn't go to the nuit blanche as it was raining and the weather was sooooo unpredictable, cold, mild, very cold and ultra cold, i didn't have the patience to deal with it. most of the exhibits are still around though so i will just visit one whenever i could get away from work.
@agima I'm curious as to what you think... I did a bunch w the cat coming in from the right, thus filling the space that is empty here... To me, that didn't feel right... I felt this version was more hinting at the cat than being about the cat... And I thought that worked better... But happy to hear other views... It's why I entered the challenge after all :)
Personally, I like the negative space. I think it gives the impression that the penguin is walking along nonchalantly without knowing what is behind him. When I crop it with my hand I get more of a feeling that the penguin knows what is behind him but has no way to escape. (Can't believe I am writing about penguins and tigers at 6.30am - 365 alters your life in more ways than one.....)
@northy@jantan for my tastes if feel a little cluttered on the left. I would of like to see what it looked like with a bit of space between the tiger and the victim..
@agima@jantan a little space w this comp didn't work for me - either the penguin landed in the middle of the shot and broke the rule of thirds or the two creatures ended up feeling disconnected... But I have another idea for this that I might try tonight that I think would address your comment but not run into the problems I had... Tx for the feedback!
This is a great shot...I do like the negative space but I can see what @agima is saying...but it sounds like you've got another POV in mind that should give us another awesome shot to view!
I like the negative space but agree with others would have liked a little more to the left of the shot and a tiny bit of separation, but not much in either case
I like this one better ... with the negative space & its probably the expression on Mr Penguins face that says ' I'm done for! ' ... the other one just feels a little clutteerd. Just my two cents worth :p
The amount of blur is perfect and I love the story. I think this composition is quite "comic-like" -- the negative space is reserved for speech-bubble. The penguin is thinking "Uh-oh..." , for example :)

Nice DOF and story BTW.
