so glad March is here... today it's warmed up considerably... i think it's supposed to go up to -4C!!
tx so much for all the lovely comments and favs on my wasteland picture... it was a complete spur of the moment shot... the light needed a human element and i was the only one available :)
Very nice - I like how the figures stand out in all those splendid white/sprakling surroundings. The both also seem to wear the same type of coats, which is cute.
wonderful subject Northy.. I dig this one a lot. Did you lower contrast on this? I've been doing that with my snow shots, I think it helps. This looks great, so I wondered if you did the same? I learn a lot from your photos... now I just need to apply it.
@adambralston tx Adam... i work in lightroom and what i did was lower clarity, but i increased overall tonal contrast... i can't recall if you work in lightroom or not... clarity deals with contrast in the mid-tones... so i guess the answer to your question is yes... and no... :)
@northy :) I do work in Lightroom. Still trying to figure out most of the sliders. Is that kind of your general approach to snow/high contrast? IE increasing overal tonal contrast (S curve stuff), but lowering the clarity (so midtones to smooth it out?).
I guess I kind of did the same on one of my shots today.. I lowered the overall tonal contrast, but then I dropped the blacks and brought up the whites..? Like ... another way of accomplishing the same similar goal?
@adambralston my "approach" varies depending on so many different things ;p for snow, yes, i tend to dropping clarity, but use strong contrast in the tone curve... i then generally use the clipping tool and bring up both whites and blacks until the red and blue start coming up...
@northy Gotcha, wished I hadn't phrased it that way. Of course it depends on the shot. :) Great idea on the clipping. I forget to use that. Thank you for your answers.
You know, I came back to this one today. I think one of the keys for me is that the lightpost actually gives substance and black to the more exposed area in the top right. It's just really good balance. Sorry, I bookmarked this one because I really wanted to study it. ;)
@adambralston tx Adam... Have to confess that this image was a bit of a happy accident... I was playing around, experimenting w exposure on the lamppost when she walked thru the scene... I didn't have time to reset the settings so this was waaaaay more exposed than it would have been if I'd been planning it!
