for "get pushed" this week, Jeff (@jsw0109) challenged me to "capture something on the street with bold colors"...
this made me think about why i generally convert street shots to black and white... which is usually because of a chaotic background that takes away from what i am thinking ought to be the main focus of the image...
again today i tried to find street shots where i could make the colour work... I was aiming for a tableau-type shot today but MAN was it difficult! just too many people in the way to get a clear shot most of the time... I am not thrilled by the one above, but it is the best of the lot...
@jsw0109 i think this may be slightly closer to what you had in mind, but not quite... i really found this challenging! everytime i thought i'd found a decent-ish scene to shoot, i'd find it really difficult to get a good line of sight because it's just so crowded everywhere... i am going to have to admit defeat for this week, but i'll take another shot at it next week just to see if i can figure out what it takes to make this work :)
I like it too... its definitely much closer. One thing that might help is to pay attention to walls, doors, etc and when you see something that would make a great backdrop, just kinda hang out and wait for someone or some people to walk into the scene. I really believe you can take your photography and skill to the next level by getting as comfortable with color street photography and you are with b&w. I see so much potential
@jsw0109 ah -so you see, this is where i got stuck... indeed, i found several locales that i thought would work... the difficulty was that there was inevitably pedestrian traffic between where i needed to stand and the backdrop... there was actually one set up that seemed awesome... this guy leaning against a large plate window right by a bright blue wall, smoking a cigarette and looking at his cell phone... he had one leg bent with his foot on the window... you could see the smoke clearly as he blew it out... people get getting in the way of a clear shot... and then he moved... i expect however, that i just need to find the right spot with the right vantage point where there is less traffic... i'm sure such a thing exists... just won't be able to go hunt it out until sometime next week... tx for the push... it's been pretty instructive!
@jsw0109 the other thing that stymies me is the light... Really having to boost the ISO to get a "sharp" image and then end up w all that noise... I can make it work in black and white... But finding it so much harder in colour...
@jsw0109 hmmm... i rarely think about using shutter priority - but ya, i guess i could... and then deal with exposure in post... but for the underground shots, i think it would mostly just come out black... like i said, it kind of works to have the noise when coverting to b&w... just not so much in colour
