for get pushed this week @robz challenged me to produce a portrait which identifies and illustrates one of the main lighting techniques used by portrait photographers... i was meant to use a real person if possible, but that was NOT going to happen... more difficult than i could cope with to use myself, and my boys all put their foot down... they won't sit for me on a good day... sitting while i fiddle with lights was sadly just not on... so i told them i was going to go out and buy a doll to use as a subject... one of my boys told me this was creepy, which of course made the concept that much more alluring... so here ya go...

the techniques i was aiming for here, more or less, are as follows:
top left: loop lighting
top right: glamour lighting
bottom left: split lighting
bottom right: rembrandt lighting

for an explanation of what these are and much better examples, see here:

(doll cost me $6.50 at a second hand store - go me!)
@robz - voila... portrait lighting techniques... sorry i could find a live model!

Hi Northy - you are amazing with your response - thanks so much for doing four different examples - and I can see why your boys didn't want to sit for them - this must have taken ages! P.S. I don't think she's creepy - just perky! Cheers Rob :)

That's really quite an interesting comparison.
I find to doll a bit creepy - I think it's the big eyes. ;)

Any of these fit the bill... definitely more interesting than using a person. No idea about different types of lighting... except window light and the occasional bit of light painting with a torch. Excellent demonstration... even the one that should be most alluring looks creepy! I often find that! Fav
