A community and the Swans
Walking beside the Leen today I met a lady; Marjory, and a youth, H watching 4 of the cygnets floating down the river, they were afraid for their safety, H had called the RSPCA for help and was waiting for them to call him back.
Yesterday all the family floated over the small weir on the river, but the cygnets could not get back up. The whole family spent the night on the river below the weir.
This morning father and mother got onto the bank but it was too high for the cygnets to follow. The father eventually went over weir and headed up stream, mum reluctantly followed with a cygnet on her back.
I had to get to Bulwell so this evening I returned to the river, but only found the parents and one cygnet
A man to came up and said the other cygnets had just got over the weir; I walked toward the weir and met Marjory again. She said that with H they found bricks and large stone and built a ramp up the weir. We could not see the cygnets but then a man talking with us received a call from his wife to say the cygnets were with their parents. Some ducks had chased them up the river; mum heard there calls and went to meet them.
As I walked back with Marjory we agreed that these swans have had an impact on the community around they have got people talking to each other as they watched the swans nest and cared about the swans’ welfare.
No doubt the swans were as pleased as the people to be reunited
