Every time we go to Newcastle we pass this little church at Williamtown and it is so sad to see it in such a state. The accident happened in 2008 and the church has sat here in this state ever since. What a shame that nobody has either repaired or demolished it. I believe that a new Uniting Church has been built now, but this one still sits here in such a sorry state.
I found a report of the accident on Google and the story is as follows:
May 16, 2008, 12:44 p.m.
A MAN was in a critical condition in hospital last night after a car he was driving ran off Nelson Bay Road at Williamtown and crashed into a church.
The man, 18, was trapped for more than an hour in the Commodore while rescue services worked to free him.
Police said the car was heading toward Newcastle when it ran off the road about 3pm.
It narrowly missed a pole and a large tree before colliding with the Uniting Church building.
The front and driver side of the car hit the weatherboard building, snapping off its entrance area and gouging a large hole in its facade.
Police said no one was in the church at the time.
A NSW Ambulance Service spokeswoman said the man was in a critical condition with multiple injuries when flown by Westpac rescue helicopter to the John Hunter Hospital.
The crash investigations unit was at the scene last night.
Wow! I feel bad for the man and feel sad that the church was not repaired. The capture certainly tells of a sad story. Funny if a new church has been built, this damaged one hasn't been sold. It looks as if the front was damaged yes, but it looks fixable to me. It could be a cute little cottage for someone or perhaps some sort little shop. It's rather cute looking.
I've often wanted to stop and take this shot, it's like the old barn, it will be gone before I stop, amazed this has been like that since 2008, 5 years and I still haven't stopped.
@zenna@sunraye@joluise@angelat@gerry It is a bit of a sad story, for the man and the church. Don't what happened to the man, but such a shame that this very old church was not repaired.
@winnedreamer Know what you mean. How long was the barn there too and then just after I took the photo of it it was demolished. Hope I haven't put the mockers on the church!
Wow...that is sad. You would think the congregation would have helped to repair it or tear it down. So sad to see it like this. Nice capture of it and thanks for the story!
@christinehosey@eyesmile@mcmary Thanks. Yes I agree. Surely it wouldn't have cost too much to repair this beautiful little church. Even if it is no longer used as a church it certainly has a great deal of historical interest. I have no idea why it has just been left here in such a sorry state for 5 years.
